"Being on a plane is like being in a different country," Yoo said. "There are so many foreigners on board. You have to keep that in mind."

My takeaway is that the behavior itself isn't the problem, it's that foreigners are seeing it.

Exactly, it's not that the behavior is bad, it's that outsiders aren't supposed to know how rude they really tend to be. It's all about image maintenance.

On the bright side, at least caring about image to that degree tends to curb the behavior a little bit.

By contrast, if you told many Americans that bad behavior abroad damages the reputation of America, you'd get plenty that would be like... "So what?"

Fun fact: Any time you refer to a group from another country as "Ugly ______", referencing their offensive behaviour, you are obligated to say it in a snooty French accent.

Even if they're French.

However, you only see Israelis on the backpacking route and in certain places like Goa, but they are pretty vile.

Russians in Egypt, again, vile.

Israelis as a rule are rude. Not Korean rude, but still bad. I was there last year and nobody smiles. They are a nation of grumps who never learned basic nicities. But they are still miles ahead of Koreans. I'd have an Israeli roommate over a Korean any day of the week.

the word "Ugly" should not be used to refer to behaviour, only physical unattractiveness in terms of people or buildings.

The problem with Korean "tourists" is that they travel together in massive tour groups and basically overrun any facilities they come across. I've met some individual Korean tourists in my travels and they were much more congenial than the giant busloads that stomp into the restaurant or bar you happen to be at and take the place over.

Followed by Koreans and as a distant memory from my past: the Germans for their early morning towels on sunbeds blitzkrieg.

Its literally like an army of ants attacking a wounded bug, with the soldier ants armed with megaphones.

They move rapidly as a co-ordinated mass until they have commandeered every single area of space.

Sometimes i'm surprised that korea didn't invade other countries.

Because 95% of the time when they are confronted about their bad behavior they back down like a complete bunch of pussies.

Not true for this case. The use of ugly in regards to temperament or moral inclinations predates America.

I live next to a hotel that caters to busloads of Chinese tourists.

Mostly they are fairly quiet and well-behaved. They don't talk loudly, they walk either in singles or pairs, they don't hog the pavement, they move out of your way, they don't bump into you.

If you go to China they tend to treat foreign people badly... but that's a different matter.

US tourists probably get a bad reputation because of their time spent in Latin America. In particular the cheap tourist spots in Mexico.

Admittedly, I haven't been to that many different places around China (a half dozen or so other cities and all over in and around the Shanghai area) but I've found Chinese people to be mostly accommodating, friendly and helpful. If not that, then they were apathetic to me. I've never been treated 'badly' for being a foreigner that I can remember. That's just my experience, of course.

Yep, pretty sure it originates in Europe.
