For most of the jobs I've interviewed for, the most important factors are:
- Experience
- Education
- Interview/Personalty
Skin color, height, gender, attractiveness, and age are not factors at all. |
Really,that gives me some hope.
I've got a good gig now, but Ive interviewed for private, public, biz eng, afterS jobs......and appearance, age, gender trumped all (in 3 different Korean cities)
Are you a teacher? In Korea??
Do you happen to be an American female age 20-30 by chance? Haha
What kind of job is this? |

I am American. I am not a female. I am over the age of 30.
Right now, I work at two hagwons in Daechi. The places that I work for hire good teachers, i.e. ones with at least a few years of experience who can actually teach the students effectively.
I work with four black coworkers, both males and females, and a short, balding Japanese-American man in his late 30s. The youngest teacher is 27, the oldest teacher is 58. I've never worked with any young, blond American females; very few of them have the experience and talent to work where I work. Even better, my academies pay salaries that are way above the market average (most teachers make between 4.0 and 6.0 million won a month).
In short, if you want to work at a place that wants professional teachers, focus on Daechi-dong, Dogok-dong, and Apgujeong. Schools in these places need proper teachers--not just attractive white faces--to retain students. |

Depends on exactly what type of job you're asking after. For entry level jobs at hagwons, even the age of the students will matter.
For young kids, places these days tend to want young, female, and inexperienced workers. The shadier the hagwon, the more emphasis on 'inexperienced' as they'll be looking to bilk a clueless newbie for anything and everything. That, plus K moms may want to see some female teachers. If they can't get them, they'll opt for young, inexperienced males. Pretty much the same thing for any shady or budget conscious hagwon. Hagwons tend to be reflexive rather than proactive. If they see a successful place with a load of young, good looking teachers, they might want to try to duplicate that perceived magic pill.
As a previous poster suggested, better hagwons teaching older kids, or teaching target content, will more than likely emphasize in-country experience, type of degree, and professionalism. They're not looking for back packer types here with a party priority.
Univeristy jobs? Depends on the university, but most places will initially seek people with in-country experience, or at least univeresity ESL teaching experience somewhere, backed up by a degree in a related dicipline. For better jobs, the competition beefs up and certs plus professional activity may help you out. But, again, they'll get what they can when they can get it. Better jobs tend to 'get known' in the local expat teaching community, though, so while they may not be at SKY universities, the competition for these jobs will be pretty intense. |

For hogwans, it is appearance... looks... sex appeal...
Unis hire by education, experience... nothing else. |
