| I met someone tonight who graduated from one of the best foreign language schools in Korea, up in Nowon-dong. I asked her if she had ever heard of a foreigner teaching a subject-class, other than a language. She laughed in my face, which I found rather insulting. She explained that they have to pass a standardized test for subjects such as sciences and math and would fear that they would fail the subject test if they studied in English rather than Korean. Makes sense really. I would hope that some student would see a benefit in studying in English but I know once the Koreans get into test mode, it is all about getting the highest score possible; and that means studying in Korean. Still, I hope that someday Korea might adopt some practices like Singapore or India and have some public schools that teach all subjects in English. |
Flat out lie. I have worked in two different foreign language HSs in Seoul and both have had native teachers teaching subjects in English (and Chinese as well).
Now, they did not teach every subject, but they did teach quite a few subjects outside of English language stuff. |

How about DoD schools on bases in Korea? Those are supposed to be great gigs. The housing allowance alone is a major incentive.
Personally, I'd be going for a NET position in Hong Kong with your qualifications.
Good luck to you. Let us know how things pan out. |

They offered regular science/math classes in English? I'm just asking because I've heard of Chinese history classes being taught in Chinese, for example, but I haven't heard of FLHSs in Seoul offering math/science classes in English - unless it's an afterschool SAT class. The school in Nowon that the OP is referring to (Daewon, I'm assuming) certainly doesn't.
Hakwons sometimes look for subject teachers, especially test prep hakwons. You can find places that offer good hourly pay, but honestly I much prefer the vacation time offered at an international school. |
