Big fan of plain old white chalk. I use the board boldly: writing big, illustrating, emphasizing. By the end of class I've usually left an artistic tableau of the lesson essentials. The kids (PS) get to clean up after me haha. Oh & chalkholders are for sissies.

Whiteboards suck. Markers are quick to fade (chalk holds its integral quality down to the nub) & the whiteboard itself soon becomes permanently grubby (chalkboards always come pristine again).

No contest.

I'm with Schwa on this one, I like to both write and draw on the board. I know using powerpoints is popular these days, but if I can help it, I'd prefer using the chalkboard to using the computer. I've also noticed that my handwriting is automatically more attractive when written in chalk than with a marker, probably because the chalk gives a bit more resistance.

I like the water chalk here (need water to erase it) because the students can't erase it with their fingers while walking into/out of class.

Also, the chalk stays on for hammer/fly swatter games. Anything on a whiteboard gets smudged on the first strike.

I did use that water chalk for one year and I found it to be okay for the reasons you listed, but I like being able to erase things with my own hand sometimes too, so I think I'd prefer normal chalk overall. Any kind of swatting game just has to wait until the end of class, so that the accidental erasing is no loss.
