Maybe it was because of my age (under 26). I was looking at getting a POS used car for 3 million won. The insurance quote from Samsung Fire was 2 million won/year.
Plus I live in Bundang and commute into Yangjae, and traffic on the Gyeongbu Expressway is hell on earth. |
The sin bundang line goes diectly from jeongja to yangjae. 15min, 900won |
12 minutes to my stop (Citizen's Forest), 2,050 won now.
I buy the monthly pass for 72,900 won and it allows me to ride 60 times within 30 days. Saves me 20k a month on subway fares....except they don't allow bus transfers |

Good idea to tell people to drive less. If someone wants to sit in traffic for 2 hours and burn $50 worth of gas when they could have taken the subway and paid $1.50 and taken half the time, good on them. |
The subways are great, but those are packed too. Seoul can always increase the number of buses and that's what they want to do. |

A packed subway generally moves at the same speed as an empty subway. More people can keep the fares lower. I hate being crowded but it keeps the fares lower. I hate being in gridlock too. At least with the subway, I can get off the train and take a breather or decide to take a taxi. I can't abandon my car in the middle of my commute.

Guys you all are getting raped.... seriously. There are better rates out there.
I am paying 500,000 a year on a 3 year old car with 50k on it. Fully covered.
When it was new I paid 700,000 a year. Domestic car. |
Because you are old(er)
And probably have been driving in Korea for a couple of years.
And who knows, maybe you are driving a Kia Morning.
You can't really tell if someone's insurance is low or high unless you know all the details. |

There are only so many busses that this city's freeways and road network can accommodate. There are only so many subways that the infrastructure can take. Try line 2 during rush hour, and you've got trains lined up at station after station.
This skirts around the real problem: Seoul's infrastructure was designed for half its current population. |

Yes. It's ridiculous. That's why they are going out of their way to build these planned cities like dongtan, songdo, cheongra, etc....seems like most people still don't want to live there though. The only successful one was ilsan.
Here's an idea: straight up pay people to live outside of Seoul. Like 200,000 a month.
The US does it with some places, like Alaska or Kansas. |

Bundang is one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country, so I'd say it was pretty successful.

The US doesn't pay people to live in Alaska, the state of Alaska redistributes its oil revenues to its residents. As for Kansas, I have no idea what you're talking about. |

2 million?!?!
I pay like 650,000 for my 4 million won decent but getting a bit long in the tooth car. I think they're trying to milk you for collision, which you don't need for a cheap car like that. Try Chartis. 24 hour English roadside assistance. Something NONE of the other companies can offer. Or Educar if you are a public school teacher.

That's a good post because it tells the name of the company people can use. That's useful.
I love the posts that are just "I pay x", but don't tell anyone where. |

Bundang, Pangyo, Pyeongchon, and the soon-to-come Werye(위례) happen to be some of the most desirable places to live. The key is proximity to Seoul and public transportation.

Here's another idea. Build cities like Sejong all over the country and people will follow their jobs away from Seoul. At least give incentives for companies to move to Songdo and Cheongra. |

Go online and compare quotes from all the major insurers. It's not rocket science.
BTW I got my insurance from Samsung.

Dude have you even been to Songdo? I have a friend who lives there and it's filling up big time. Even Cheongra has seen steady growth. |

Oh and as far as driving goes, once you get used to it, you'll like it for the most part. But you need to adapt your driving styles to fit Korean driving culture or you are simply not going last on the roads here. I say get with it or get off the road.
I have adapted and I like it. It's fun to drive fast but you need to be vigilant. I have never been in an accident either. |

I found the official name:
Rural opportunity zone. Tax credits and student loan waivers.to live in shite areas of the US. Could do something like that here.
I had no idea songdo and cheongra were popular now.
Hey, thats great. Glad its working. Get some elbow room in the subway hopefully. |

The rural opportunity zone is a Kansas specific thing that's coming from the Kansas state government (not the US in general). |

Not exactly true. More people on the train means more time getting on and off, so the stops are a bit longer. Not a big difference, but it adds up when it happens at every station. |
