The most damaging price increases come from increases in rent. Thankfully this is a non-issue for EFLers since, in Korea, that expense is covered by employers Cool

The OP spends 120,000 a week? Then he is going to be saving a ton of money regardless. A typical EFLer's salary is around 2.4 million a month. So he will probably be saving around 2 million won a month. Cool

This is before we even talk about side work which can be very lucrative. Cool

The average ESLr salary is 2.1 million per month. The net is @ 1.9 million after deductions. Minus 120,000 won per month leaves @ 1.5 million won. Without the permission of the employer and immigration, side work is illegal. Little Cool cool faces don't make it legal. Not everyone's rent expense is covered by their boss. Little Cool cool faces don't make it true.

That's based on the price of oil staying where it is or going lower.

Since no one seemed to have seen the big drop in prices coming, no one probably knows when they'll go back up. Could be this year, could be next.
Same thing goes for that forecast--could be right, could be wrong.

O RLY? This is what you wrote back when you lived in Korea (four years ago):

I used to teach in Seoul 4 - 5 years ago and was wondering how the working environment for foreign teachers has changed since then, especially considering the huge drop in the value of the WON.

I started teaching science in a quasi-'international' school for 3.0/month but paid my own flight and housing, then moved to a 'consulting' place (cheating kids into US unis) at 4.0/month. I thought this was pretty decent given that posted salaries were in the 2.0 - 2.5 range at the time. You could also easily find work on the side as well. I ended up having a random girl come up to me on the street and ask me to do conversation lessons with her for 40k/h, which consisted of just hanging out in a cafe, and picked up a private group paying about 1.2/month among other odds and ends. It seemed like there were quite a few people making at least 5.0/month.

From what I've seen looking at posting lately though, it doesn't look like the posted salaries have changed at all and seems like regulations have gotten tighter. University jobs used to pay decent and give crazy paid vacations (almost half the year off), but I heard those contracts were changing. So how are things going over there these days? Is it still possible to pull in decent dough?

- 4 or 5 years ago in Seoul. I guess waygooks weren't as common back then. Now Koreans won't bat an eyelid at you and the chances of one radomly coming up to you in the street and asking you to tutor them is slim.

- work on the side is much easier now if you are female. There is much more western females here now than in 2007 when I arrived. And some of them aren't that bad looking either. Also there was Christopher Neil case since you left and that caused a huge problem for the image of male nets.

- Yes regulations are tougher. See my earlier point as to why. Also many waygooks faked their degree certs.

- Salaries are at 2.3 range and should stay that way or go lower. Frankly wonamins only ability is to speak a language. If you have no other skill than that you don't deserve one nickel more.

- Don't like Korea even when you were pulling in over 5 million? Then don't come back since you'll like it a whole lot less when you are only pulling in 3 million. My advice - STAY AT HOME.

You are welcome.

I know you probably already do this but shop around and check prices. When things are cheap buy them, and when they aren't, don't.

Example: Over the last 6 months I stopped buying pork because it was so expensive. This week I noticed that samgyupsal was much cheaper than it has been in some time so I bought some.

Example: I bought a new laptop computer this week because they were selling for 350,000 won at both Emart and Home Plus. They had been really expensive for a long time and I didn't buy one, but I occasionally check the prices and low and behold.

Foreigners too often assume that ******* is so expensive in Korea and never check at the price again. That is just stupid. Also the internet isn't always better.

I'm buying a new laptop soon off of Auction, were you able to change the language?

I'm ok with a computer in Korean so I didn't ask. I assume you could change the language but you'd better ask the seller.

The average entry level salary is 2.1. Anyone with at least a year experience, TEFL/Celta, education degree/english major etc is making more.

No doubt one can smart shop and save money here and there as long as one is willing to take what's being discounted.

But in many ways Korea remains the home of high prices. Korean consumer association is pointing the finger at global, i.e, foreign, brands but I wonder if their profit margins are higher in SK than elsewhere.

Samsung and LG are certainly still charging a pretty penny.
