ok, thanks ttompatz.... I guess im gonna call immigration and ask them also just to double check. Ill post what they say for others to get another view.

As i mentioned my main issue is being given more work then time allows for, thus meaning overtime is pretty much forced upon us. In my mind, this breaks the contract, which states the hours paid and worked. I dunno if just going home at hometime, or 15mins later, is enough to justify being fired, or whether being fired for this would constitute a breaking of labour laws. Id hope it would, otherwise your employer can basically force unlimited free work out of you, but i dunno how this sort of thing translates into real legal results.

A concrete example being that,on friday, at 7pm (hometime) i was told to have vocabulary sheets typed up by the coming monday (no prior warning). I left work 2 and a half hours late on that day, and have done 2-3 hours at home working on them. This of course is all unpaid.

Its simply exploitation, which the law is supposed to protect people from.

I have 2 comments in regards to your issues at work.

1) A teacher's job is not just what happens "in the classroom". Welcome to the profession.

2) There are 44 hours in a work week (defined by labor law and your contract). Learn to say, "No".

Spot on advice Ttom.

There is a certain amount of extra work outside the classrrom that can be expected but this place is taking the cake. Check your contract. In my view feeding the kids and watching them is classroom time.

Your place is very understaffed. Is business bad?

I understand its not just classroom time, there are hours factored into the day which do no take place in the classroom, i was just saying there must be limits to overtime. But yes, saying no (and hoping they dont fire me and therefore effectively kick me out of the country by severing any chance i have at making a living) is the only option it seems.

Upon calling immigration (1345), ttompatz is right, without a letter of release you are unable to apply for work until the expiration of your original contract.

oh well.

Awnine, out of curiosity, what hagwon are you at? Sounds similar to the hagwon I used to work for. PM me if you don't want to post it on the board.
