Many many lessons to be learned here. Among them, if anyone here owns their own hagwon and employs drivers, you can be sued if he/she screws up.
If anyone on here is in that situation, check and double check. Micromanage your drivers if you have to. And follow the law with having parent helpers in the back. As annoying as it can be. |
The lesson is don't shuttle your customers around. But I think that might be a death sentence for a hagwon, unless all the others decide to stop driving their customers around.
There will always be accidents, and deaths. Can't predict it. |
?????
The poor child would be alive if he/she had had their seatbelt on.
We can add to that, if the owner had checked/locked the door.
Yes, accidents happen, and sometimes it's just bad luck/timing. This isn't one of those cases. |

You can predict it. Other countries have realized that not wearing seatbelts results in more deaths and injuries. That's why they have laws to make people wear seatbelts.
I've been beating this drum for ages. There was a K-pop star who died in a car accident and wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
And i wrote

To which I expected people to agree and support legislation regarding wearing seatbelts. But instead some posters did the usual comparison to another country with similarly stupid laws regarding wearing seatbelts in the back seat.
So instead of actually dealing with the problem it was ignored and yet another terrible accident has occurred.
Perhaps this is why I get so angry at some of the people on this board. Instead of actually dealing with problems and looking for solutions, they instead make excuses thus insuring the same mistakes are repeated. |

Right. This wasn't an accident; it was an inevitable. |

My hagwon (which I quit) had a heavy glass door that kept coming off it's hinges. One day a student forcefully pushed it open and when it swang back it came off.
I just barely managed to catch it before it smashed down on a students head. I am nearly certain that the student would either have died, or been seriously injured.
The hagwon owner simple had us lift the door back up onto it's hinges and did nothing else to solve the problem.
One day that door will come down and a child will die... and it's because the owner was too cheap to care... she also didn't pay teacher's their wages, pension and a number of other things... So, I suppose I one shouldn't be surprised. |

My hagwon owning friend has informed me that hagwon bus rules are changing, though from what he described to me, it doesn't sound like safety is their main concern. He said that now hagwon's have to either run their own bus or have specific contracts with their bus drivers. He's had trouble with crappy drivers before, so he's not particularly happy about it since apparently now they'll be shackled to a specific driver for a certain amount of time.
One hopes they're also upping the requirements to be one of those drivers. |

I'd tell the parents of that child about what happened and what didn't (repair of the door). Let's see what happens when they know and tell other parents. |

Korea has seatbelt laws too, and like other countries, some people follow the law, some do not. Plenty of Koreans do buckle up.

I'm looking at the thread, and aside from jvalmer responding to someone being unclear about seatbelt laws, I wouldn't really describe the response as what you are implying.

Dude, what do you mean dealing with the problem? I and I don't think anyone else here outside some serious F-visas are a legislator or even a voter here. What the heck is posting on Dave's going to accomplish?
What were you expecting us to do? Rise up en masse and descend upon Seoul City Hall to demand a seatbelt law? What were you doing to deal with the problem? You posted a two-line comment. I don't carry children in my car, but if I did, I would insist they buckle up. If adults want to ride in the back and not buckle up, they're free to do so and die, unless someone is in the middle, in which case, buckle up.
Even then, if we're going 5 minutes down the block, I don't care. Hasn't anyone ever rode in the back of a pickup before?
Are you seriously linking the responses of people on Dave's with some accident to which they were not a party to? Do you think the afterschool bus driver was reading Dave's and was swayed by what people wrote here?
Man, talk about delusional. |

There is nigh on zero enforcement of seat belt laws here. Where I come from I'd say 98% of people wear seat belts. That has come about through a no-tolerance policy by the police and educational programs run by schools in tandem with TV ads/bill boards etc. From riding in cars with Koreans I'd say the seat belt use rate here would be 50/50 max. Maybe less.
And didn't they pull back the law about kids having to be buckled up? Mother's complained so the government backed down. |

Of course you can't understand my point. You've proven yourself over and over again to be so lacking in substance that you will do anything to protect Korea.
It's a waste of time to discuss matters with you. The most effective way to deal with you and your strange need to argue over any perceived threat to this country is to ignore you. |

Seriously?
"I've been beating this drum for ages."
" To which I expected people to agree and support legislation regarding wearing seatbelts. "
Your quote on the original thread was this-

I'm stunned that no one responded to your rousing drum beat call to decisive legislative action that you have trumpted time and time again over the past 2 years. After all you so clearly advocated for a specific bill to be introduced and national assembly members we could contact about this. Clearly you cared very deeply about this issue and clearly the people were all dead set against you, what with all the vitriolic replies to you in the thread. How someone could read your post and not agree to, and support seatbelt legislation, I do not know. After all, nothing says legislation like the words "could" and "encourages". Everyone, follow the banner of jazzmaster as he leads to legislation "encouraging people to wear seat belts". After all, so many of our great laws of the land that set out fines and punishments have the word "encourage" in it.
Before you made your point about how people responded in the thread, perhaps you should have read the thread to make sure it was true.
With its whopping 9 posts on 1 page, it was clearly an epic battle of apologists vs. bashers for the ages. But I don't blame you as clearly your post inspired a bunch of replies filled with excuses about why you were wrong.
