I'm not trying to be a douche, but I work half those hours for more money (not significantly more) but still. Definitely if you're happy working those long hours your call, but even as bad as the pay is here, you can do better.

OP. I am curious. Do you have any time for any kind of hobby with hours like that?

I was getting exactly that on my last job for working 4 hours less per day than you.

But even that was too much. Seriously, your health will suffer.

I'm basically getting that now on 4.5 hour days.

I guess it all comes down to how much you like working there. You've spent seven years at other schools and three at that one, so at least you know what the grass is really like on the other side of the fence.

Okay, the negotiations are done. I have two choices for my next contract:

A.) 2.8 (2.3 plus 500 housing). Start at 8am and finish at 9pm.

B.) 2.7 (2.3 plus 400 housing). Start at 9am and finish at 9pm.

Both are 30 hours a week and no longer splits, but spreads. I agreed to this so I wouldn't have a morning block starting at 6:50am. Early mornings aren't impossible for me to pull off but the neighbors are university students that can act up from time to time and being sleep-deprived makes me irritable like nothing else.

I did receive a bump in my overtime to 30 per hour and I also agreed to work off-site for 35 per hour plus transportation. If the class is off-site and overtime, the pay is 40 per hour.

I'm allowed one month off unpaid to visit family and 10 days of paid vacation in country but only usable in clumps of two days at a time per month.

I'm favoring option B because the shenanigans are usually petering out at around midnight lately. Prior to these new tenants above me, things were quite quiet, but living a near a university you're bound to get some drunken students acting up from time to time.

What do you guys think? It's sad that after ten years (three with the same company) the pay is stagnant but the schedule should let me get enough sleep and the overtime will be nice.

Like other people on here I think you're mad. Get a job where you can

a) Find your own place to live and can get a decent night's sleep
b) Start and finish at a decent time. It doesn't matter that you can go home in between lessons, you'll still be on work mode and won't be able to relax properly.
c) Have at least two weeks paid holiday a year in a block. That should be a minimum.

Basically what is happening is that experienced teachers like the OP are totally undervalued.

Its insulting. The school probably pays more to its 20-year old female teacher for half the hours.

If you want to stay in korea past the age of 35 you have to either marry a local and then amass privates.. or be prepared for annually worsening conditions... that are beginning to resemble the slave era.

A 20-year-old assistant at his school won't make that much money, she'd be lucky to make half of that, but many Korean hagwon teachers probably do make that kind of money (2.8 for 14 hours a day).

I don't know the OP and I'm not going to say that you should or need to make more money. Hopefully you're happy with your life, but I think you deserve a lot better than what your employer is giving you.

Teachers over 35 will continue to be fine.

The OP's job is an abberation. It is completely atypical of your average EFL job.

Thats why everyone is on this thread telling him they earn more than him for half the hours.

Move on. There are teachers in their 2nd or 3rd year getting a MUCH better deal than this. An AS program would cut your hours in half. while getting somewhere in the range of 2.7-3.1

I have taught all ages and levels. I understand wanting to teach adults, but it is just not worth it with this kinda schedule. teach kids and work 12-6 or 2-8 etc

Split shifts? After 10 years? Move on and don't look back.
