They have given me a letter: it apparently says that I am a very poor teacher, lack many skills, have no basic Korean conversational skill, but am very diligent and warm hearted.

The school have ordered the grade teachers who I have taught with this past year to not provide me an alternative letter as they want the one with my main co-T to stand as the only one I have.

I'm hurt that they could have such a vendetta against me, I am aware that there have been issues but to go out on a limb in this way takes some level of dislike for a person. A few months ago my coT sang my praises in regard to the classes I taught alone, and were very happy with my materials and resources...

The grade teachers have said I prepare very well / have good ideas for activities etc - certainly there seems to be many more issues when I teach with my main coT

Thanks - I'm honest with myself that I've not be a ideal foreign teacher but in no way have I caused this level of hate.

Yes. I've recycled the letter.

I have two weeks summer camp, 3 days desk warming and 13 days holiday to take.......

I'm going to get through it.

May I suggest that, if that was your real name in one of your first posts, that you go back and edit it out.

They probably don't troll this site and most likely won't see what you wrote - but it has happened and can cause you a lot of grief of it does.

It's best not to use your real name on this site at all, TBH.

If you do plan to go home and regroup, and you really want to teach - why don't you use the time to at least get a CELTA (if you don't have one). It will help you in the classroom and in your job search, especially outside of Korea.

Good luck in your job search.

After I saw youe post and she edited hers I took here quote out of mine. I was not sure a quote could be edited, but it can. In this case a good thing. But think of what people do if they can quote someone and edit the quote!!!!!!!!!! Shocked If there is a way to make it not possible to change a quote, then I hope this site does that.

My CELTA qualification has been almost as much use as a chocolate fire-guard ....

Not one single skill that I learned on that very expensive course has been used in this country, I would have been better taking a qualification is creative dance!

In short, an unusable letter….which is the same as not giving you a letter.
My approach for gathering letters of reference has always been to ask the person directly if they are willing to write a letter in advance. If the answer is yes, then I ask them further if they will commit to writing positively about me. If the answer is still yes, then we continue from there; if no, then I thank them for their honesty, time and consideration, and move on to find another referee. In the event of a continuation, I also ask whether they would like me to write a draft and submit it to them for revision, or if they are willing to share a draft with me in advance should they desire to write the letter entirely on their own. In other words, I try as much as possible to be a party to the process and participate in the crafting of a letter as a collegial partner. This allows for an increase in document control, and a decrease in nasty surprises. Generally, I have assisted my referees, who in some cases wanted me to give them a list of attributes or accomplishments, perhaps background information or answers to a series of interview questions, etc., and they have been grateful for the helpful interaction. I ask for multiple signed copies, some printed on official letterhead, and others on plain paper, scan these to digital format, have some sealed in envelopes with another signature or initials across the flap, and leave others unsealed. I also like to periodically gather these letters whether I need them or not and file them away for future use. This has the benefit of giving the referees more time to complete the letter, as there is no looming deadline. Nevertheless, I always come to agreement with my referees about an arbitrary deadline, and maintain follow up on the documentation progress until completion of the committment. Finally, let me say that under no circumstances would I allow or encourage someone to write negatively about me in a reference letter. Even admitting the absurdity of these letters in principle, I still see no point engaging the process otherwise.
