He may or may not be trying to rip you off. It is pretty standard in Korea to work at a reduced rate your first couple of months.

I my 14 years in Korea working as a teacher, hagwon owner, recruiting company owner and working in the legal profession here I have never once encounter this.

Pretty standard my arse!!!

The only thing that is pretty standard here, is getting bad advice on Dave's.

Then you need to expand your horizons. Many employees in Korea work the first month or so at less pay.

Please tell me this isn't true! I have never heard of such nonsense.
Do you mean Korean people or ESL teachers? I find this so hard to believe!
Wouldn't that be like going to a restaurant and ordering a sirloin steak, salad, and baked potato but only receiving the salad BUT being told not to worry; just go ahead and pay the full price today and the NEXT time you come, we'll give you what you ordered,-we promise?"

I said this does not happen in hagwons and any contract that says this needs to be passed on.

And no, your comparisons are not the same.

Well we can't all be as enlightened as Murica and call it a 9 month unpaid internship.

Is it normal to be paid lower than the agreed amount for the 1st few months as you are in "training" and "orientation"?

My intuition tells me its a F#@!ing rip off and turn it down Exclamation

With the other responses in mind:

- Yes, companies in Korea can have probationary periods - although in my experience, it's mainly to be able to release you with ease if things aren't panning out, as opposed to reduced pay, but whatever
- Hakwon generally do not do this; the only exception I can think of that might be considered "legitimate" would be places like YBM paying a training rate during your actual training

If the job is super crazy awesome and opens up some real bad-ass doors for you, then go for it. Otherwise, pass.

The OP posted a contract for review in the sticky section, then opened this thread a day later for discussion of "training salary for first few months" in reference to that contract. Here is the line item in question:

The Employer will pay a monthly salary of 2.1M won for regularly scheduled hours which we mentioned on the page 2. During the Training Period, the Employee will be paid 2.0 M won, for the first few months, OCT, NOV, DEC.
Seems to me that the employer just wants to skim off KRW 300,000 won from the employee. Training?! More like stealing.

If someone does take this gig, they should ask the boss every day for the first three months " So what training will I be getting today? So who is in charge of today's training? What is the topic of my training this wonderful afternoon?"
