That’s probably the one to go with then. |

| How easy is it in china to pick up private/part time weekend work? |
Keep in mind that privates ARE illegal in China as in Korea. Unless you have written consent from your employer as the U.S embassy in Beijing states. And even then the law varies from province to province.
Yes enforcement IS spotty to say the least but it still is frowned on.
Now some employers may have no problem with it...as long as you aren't in competition with them. Doesn't mean you won't get in trouble doing it.
That said...yes it's quite a bit easier than Korea (people will approach you on the street, supermarkets, and even the school grounds at times). But for the most part it will PROBABLY take a bit more legwork then that. I wouldn't know for sure...I don't do them. |

| Mr pink, what would be considered a good monthly income in Guangzhou? |
I am not sure, but my total monthly living costs with a wife and kid are about 17000-18000 RMB, so yeah 13000 is pretty garbage IMO.
(I am up north and 5000-6000 of that cost above is given by my employer for rent...I honestly cannot remember what my housing allowance is this year.) |

Cost of living, I think you're right...I guess I would have to live quite frugally in China, which will be hard in Guangzhou. (Temptation of partying...on a budget!).

Ok I didn't read all the post in this thread so I stand corrected about your perceptions. But I do think you need to understand that the cost of living in Korea is not lower than in Guangzhou if not higher. So yes EPIK will give you a higher salary but not much and that marginal difference will be wiped out by the higher costs of living.
And partying in Korea is not cheap. Especially not if you are in Seoul. Alcohol may be one of the few cheap things in Korea but that is what makes it expensive.. Because it is so cheap you drink a lot and before you know it you have lost all self-control and you wake up the next morning having blown 300,000 won.
I also see that you come from SA. So you should be aware that EPIK gave you a lot of hoops to jump through in the past and a year ago they gave use even more hoops to jump through. This is especially true for us saffas. Saffas, unlike people from other E2 countries, have to prove that we got our middle and high school education from schools that use English as their primary tuition language. Pretty complicated when in SA we do not really use middle schools and just another bloody hoop to jump through.
And then on top of all of that you can easily end up being placed in the middle of nowhere with EPIK.
Just my 2 cents |

| Tell them you want 15,000 rmb a month. China has a huge demand for teachers. If they don't give that, you can search all over China for work. It's not the most expensive in CHina, but pricier than many other places. You really do need that much if you're going to pay your own apartment. I also assume travel reimbursement and other perks such as free meals, etc. (In Korea, you have to pay for them.) |
