Problem is with this industry to get a permanent position most jobs require a science degree, usually comp sci, maths, physics to get an interview. Also he'll likely be starting at the low end of the salary scale. Then there's the fact if you're going freelance you'll be competing with indian devs wth more experience than you at $10-$15 an hour and at the other end English professionals with 10+ years experience at 50-150 an hour who have the wages you want.

Still a step in the right direction though and it's a good career step for anyone with those degrees to move in.

I do think it might be hard for him to break into the field with the computing stuff. But, a few low-paying jobs, some experience and contacts and he'll likely be well on his way. It's like most fields I guess.

There's certainly more room for growth and advancement in computer stuff as opposed to ESL.
