i've been in seoul 6 months. i've seen a grand total of 2 retarded people, and one student (american, visiting seoul for the summer) at our hagwon who has something that i assume is cerebral palsy.

does anyone know what exactly happens to these people?

My sister is visiting here for 2 weeks and she just said the opposite Smile We had lunch at the food court in Suwon station and there was a group of 5-6 primary school kids whow all were 'special' (1 with Downs, some of the others looked like they had fragile X). And then again in a restaurant in Kyongju last weekend, a family with 2 boys, the youngest one clearly had some problem, skinny legs and a strange face but very friendly and he wouldn't leave until he had given the restaurant owner a kiss. The parents didn't seem embarrassed at all, and the restaurant owner was very friendly and gave the boy a big hug.

I also thought that in Asia people are more embarrassed about disabled kids/people, but it seems that I was wrong or Korean society is changing.

many koreans except the responsibility as a message from GOD or something.. or its my child there for I shall love it..
embarressed.. some do! many do.. they are never seen with the child.

you want to see special children??? go to an orpanage....
you will see a result of korean parents who take one look at the child and abandon it like its a used condom!!!
of course this happens in every country.. also korea is not really equiped to take care of special challenged children.. medcare, access, schools, etc... if you had a special child you would want to raise it in the west!
I have met a few special kids in korea.. I have taught them ENglish..
they get teased or ignored just as they would back home..
but they dont get teased too much. at least korean kids well the ones I saw around these children.. felt sorry for them.. so didnt tease them..
just ignored them...
being special in any country is not easy!!!
