Taking a break. I've gone back to start small publishing/design business in my hometown. I'd consider a return at some point (there are lots of things I enjoyed in Korea for sure) but if I come back, I'm hoping it will be on an F class visa. The gf and I are in a role-reversal right now... she's trying to adjust to Canada. Either way I can see us hopping back and forth over time.

On ya, Grotto!! So true. I am starting to see this as a nonexistent ideal in Korea. Of course, there must be those who do it.

I think I am starting to get somewhere by standing up to this boss os mine. Still got to get better at that. I will go in and see him directly.

The director first asked me to do extra work preping for the summer break.

He was nice and offered extra pay. But I got told this by a Korean teacher. I never heard it from the horses mouth. I was busy. I haven't negotiated the price with him yet.

This will be the first time I have heard of anybody getting paid for prep and other valuable time by a hagwon, maybe not worth griping over.

I didn't do a good thing. I did this extra work last week go without talking it out and now it's done.

Maybe he'll decide to be unreasonable, but hey, I still have a whole whack of classes to get paid for now that summer break is here.

Still, should have gone in..

We'll see.........

When they try to get us to work during our breaks or come in during holidays, the wannabe law student comes out in me, and I point out how making us work eight straight hours without breaks or not giving us full ten days vacation are outright illegal. Our director dumped a lot of classes on one of our teachers before she learned to say NO. She's been stressed. Seeing she was maxed out, he tried to make me take extra classes. I said NO.

"But you're the only foreign teacher not working overtime."

"Is overtime supposed to be permanent? You'll have to face the fact that you need to hire another foreign teacher."

We're getting two new foreign teachers next week. Laughing

MY STORY
Our director had mentioned that the school owner wanted to take the foreigners out for dinner sometime. We said that's great as long as we got advanced notice. Two weeks later we asked the director about the dinner.

"Is it tonight, by any chance?"

(hideous high pitched giggle)
"No, it is not tonight."

Since my classes were over, I headed home and ate dinner. As I finished my last piece of chicken, I get a call.

"We're waiting for you for dinner."

"Oh, that's a problem because I already."

"That's not good. We need you for dinner. I thought I tell you."

You do get the "I told you" a lot because they DID tell you.

Dont you have Korean ESP?

Truthfully though, I only got that a couple of times. And both times they had mentioned something without confirming if it was an idea or a plan.

I tell them that I quit my job at the Psychic Network to work for them. Of course, that line gets lost in the ether.

The 'I told you' comes down to the fact that Korean hagwon bosses and supervisors are completely focused on ripping you of for as much cash as they possibly can. They're also focused on doing the same to the kids parents albeit in subtle ways.

Korean hogwan owners in many cases are utter subhuman scum. Mine has just screwed me to the tune of about 1m won. I know other people have got ripped of more but it is still annoying.

They are so preoccupied with trying to be devious it is a habit to tell you as little as is functionally possible. This in my opinion is why they dont tell us about things. They love their secrets!
