Ladies, thank you for your very honest responses, I believe you completely understood what I was asking. Gentlemen, those were some pretty creative answers.

Contrary to popular opinion.. not every Russian girl is a prostitute!! Its a country of people.. they aren't all prostitutes anymore than all Western women are sluts!! Sorry to be so to-the-point.. but too many people work on all-inclusive stereotypes which simply just aren't true.

Russian women are fit, attractive, stylish, beautiful, etc. Being called a Russian is actually a compliment of the highest order.

Oh.. p.s. brunettes are hot.

I hardly assume that all Russian women are prostitutes, but generally- the ones that are in Korea are. I've met a couple of Russian girls who were here studying and I felt terrible for them becaiuse of the stereotypes here.

Trust me when a Korean man asks if you're from Russia, the next question won't be if you're from Moscow, it will be "How much"? It's pretty easy to tell when someone is genuinely interested in you as a person, and when he just wants to buy you.

I occassionally met Russian women (almost always students - as I lived in the Shinchon area - all universities). Just seemed like they got a bad rap all the time.

Granted there are Russian prostitutes if you search them out. But around HongDae and Shinchon, most Russian women were students studying Korean, or sometimes even ethnic Koreans. Often times you'd get girls just running the bar or club in serving drinks (in places like Limelight). Many drawn in by the economy, etc.

Anyhow, I enjoyed the conversations with Russian women (and never once had anything about paying for sex come up - never). Mostly just talk about Korea, Koreans, life, etc.. all that anyone talks about in any expat bar or club.

I did however make the mistake a few times asking a western non-Russian girl if she was Russian.. and if looks could kill, I'd have been dead. But just because someone mistakes someone for a Russian, it isn't the same thing as propositioning someone for sex or assuming someone's occupational interests. Lets face it, Russian women are interesting to talk to!!

Oh, did I mention brunettes are hot?

Well then why don't you just say to a chick you're beautiful. Being called a russian is nearly already followed up with 'how much?' No we don't enjoy being called hookers because the person saying that thinks that they can treat us like a piece of property.

I agree with you Lemongirl.................when they ask if I am Russian- it is not asked in the tone one would consider from an interested person. it is asked in a sleazy voice accompanied by "the look"- which any woman who has been asked- knows what Im talking about.
It sucks!

...I hear you, I have met some really cool Russian non-prostitute women here as well. Smile

But seriously, sweetie... some middle-aged Korean man in a bad suit asks you if you're Russian what are the chances that he has the experiences, the multicultural sensitivity and the open-mindedness to mean it as a general compliment or well-intended conversation starter? Rolling Eyes

i'm also with lemon girl on this one. it's totally annoying and NOT a compliment when someone asks you if you're russian. why is it that guys always think it's ccomplimentary to be asked if you have sex with people for money. Evil or Very Mad i understand that not every russian girl who's here is a *beep*, and it's gotta suck evenmore for them, but when men are asking you if you're russian, they are really asking if you're a sex worker.

hair colour has nothing to do with it, i'm a red head and i get asked all the time.

i was in samcheok this past week and for the first time in 2 1/2 years in korea, someone commented that i was russian (an old man muttered it under his breath).....it was hot out and i was wearing a tank top and pretty short shorts (hey, it's super hot and i was heading for the beach). i think, sadly, although it's not always the case, in a lot of koreans' minds, russian=prostitute.

Any bloke with a bit of tact can ask such things without looking like a condescending fart.. :)

"Hey that's a pretty nice accent, where are you from?"

You save yourself a lot of embarrassment, and sneak in a sly compliment too.. :D

hehehe

jae.

Seriously all that crap about saying that if they asked if you're Russian and then saying it's only cause you're pretty... that's just a lame ass way of trying to get back on an even standing. Besides, there are a hell of a lot of pimply, soft, saggy, make-up poorly applied, dressing in anything revealing regardless of flattering Russian prositutes in Daegu and Busan that I've seen, so I don't necessarily think that the prettiest women in Russia are running off to Korea to work the flesh trade. I'd rather look like me than any of the Russian prostitues I've seen here, though a couple of the Filipina prostitutes... damn, prett-----y!

People could just say "Where are you from?" The truth is that Canadians don't like to be asked if they are American, either (though fortunately no one assumes American=prostitute). So why bother to guess at a country when it'll get many people annoyed if you guess wrong?

Koreans do think Russian=prostitute. Speak good Korean and have a well-groomed appearance=missionary. Live in any town with a lot of GIs and no one says foreigner, it's always American.
