I actually appreciate an ad saying 'yankie white chick wanted' as it saves me the hassle of sending in my resume and not hearing back.
Not quite sure if it's any different to back home, ok sure your initial resume can be lacking in a description but when they interview you they get to descriminate against you then.
Have you even seen an ugly Coke rep or Beer rep? Surely some qualified ugly people must have applied for those positions at some stage.
Just because this society is a lot more visible in its practices (ie mirrors everywhere, blatant selection criteria etc) doesn't make them any more racist than any other country. Maybe their discrimination is just a little more overt.
As for me I'm still waiting for my response from Playboy, sure I'm male and won't be turning any heads with my looks but hey, surely Hef wouldn't discriminate against me?!?! |

Though egregious and often distasteful, there is something to be said [pragmatically] about open discrimmination. Some of my foreign friends complain that the discrimmination and racism is too covert in America. They feel that though people smile on the surface, they are in fact more dangerous than Europeans and Asians who may be more "in your face" about it. At least they expose themselves for who they are.
I prefer a more egalitarian system myself, and ideally distasteful distinctions of all kinds should be avoided when possible. For example, I'm as offended by patriotic displays, as well as nationalistic and religious murmurings, as I am by overtly racist ones. Any group that distinguishes itself from another is fundamentally divisive. On the other hand, it pays to be part of a successful group.
Everyone has preferences. To advertise it in a blatant fashion does seem a little perverse though.
One of the things I am fairly certain of is that I'm a human being. Beyond that it gets a little opaque. |

I like how i am not a native speaker because i am black.
lol on a side note. a girl once hired me specificly because she figure i could teach here more slang and comon speach for the sole reason that i was black.
go figure. |

we have to remember that political correctness is a product of western philosophy, and that in someways we can't enforce our worldview on others, no matter how back-assward they may seem. i am not an advocate of sexism, racism nor homophobia, and am glad that canada is my home, but essentially, if korea wants to be archiac, there's nothing we can do about it.
the west has been racist in the past, but the difference between north america and asia is that north america as we know it, truly is a nation of immigrants. with the acception of the natives (who were mostly killed off with small pox, alcohol and christianity), no one can trace their family back farther than 400 years. we are an inherenantly heterogenious society. korea is inherently homeogenious. everything about korea from fashion to the work place is part of that "blending into the group" pyschology. sure it sucks for us while we're here, but we can always leave, it's not like we're stuck here. i know that when i go back to the west, i will never be returning to asia, but at least i gave it try. |

| Well, im a 51 year old American and this is my 4th year here. I have had many job offers and never had a problem with age. Yes, some places say under 30, but many dont care. Currently I am in the lowest paying job I have had cause I am 1/2 hr from one beach,45 minutes from another beach and I love the sea. And on the upside, the job is a great one with wonderful people, a great supervisor, and a real nice apartment. I hated Seoul. It was crowded and the air was not good. Im in a great setting, and i'm happy and contented. Ywa, aomw places want young people, but others just want some one who loves kids and will not run off!! |

True, guy, but this ain't home. You see the same kind of ads in Japan. Here, it ain't "discrimination", just employers being upfront about who they want to hire.
I know you're not a newbie, so why are you so shocked/outraged now? |
I wondered the same thing. This is suddenly news to him?
I know, let's rent out Uncle Jebs barn, put on a show, and solve this problem! |
