Hahaha Seoul's on the list.
I picked Bangkok, but it was a close tie with Manila.

I've been to 5 on the list and :

1:Manila
2:Bangkok
3:Seoul
4:Singapore
5:Kuala Lumpa

I put Manila above Bangkok because it was easy to get out to the bars and clubs with the locals, and there aren't those crowds of tourists like you find in Bangkok. I'm sure there are places in Bangkok where you can aviod the tourists but I haven't found them yet!
Phnom Phen and Beijing would also be above Seoul and the rest.

I agree about Manila and Phnom Penh- I haven't been to Beijing yet. I think one reason they are such cool cities is that they are not overly preoccupied with tourism and tourists.

Look at what is happening with Bangkok- the P.M. is going absolutely American Protestant on the nightlife. Two weeks ago the Q Bar (I think that is the right name) was raided and people were pee tested. Its one of the most popular clubs in Bangkok. Anyone not carrying a passport was arrested. Midnight is the closing time now, but the P.M. proposed 10 or 11 just a couple of months ago. Now the level of clothing being worn by the dancers in clubs is being scrutinized, and much more coverage is being required.

I really think they are taking a page from the U.S. Republican's playbook, and I don't think that P.M. Thaksin has suddenly found Christianity and its rules on his own. I'm sure they are receiving both war on drugs and war on terrorism pressure and "assistance".

Anyway, Manila and Phnom Penh are still wide open and the locals are great and fun. And, between disorganization and indifference, no one is likely to get pee tested any time soon.

It looks like Indonesia has a interesting variety of looks in the people, which would be refreshing after a homogenous place like Korea. I mentioned this to my friend who spent 2 years there. Apparently there is a broad range of ethnic groupings across the 1000+ islands, Great!
Whats the pay like for a teacher there I wonder?
I met a few Indonesian girls in Geckos last year, they were truly the most approachable, fun, easy going women..with a sort of innocent, open feel to them..really cool.

Actually they were trainee air hostesses here on a stopover flight.

There is a large variety. Lots of differnt ethnic groups and cultures. Unfortunately, the overwhelming common denominator over the most of them is Muslim, meaning the headscarves during the day (often with lipstick and tight jeans).. but in short.. I felt a really conservative element during the day.. and just wild hedonism unbelievablebly so at night (particularly in Jakarta over elsewhere).

I also agree that Indonesians are fun-loving, very friendly, and just very social and nice (much like Filipinas).

Teaching-wise.. I was looking in Bandung in the Summer of 2001.. it wasnt all that good at that time (but heard it was good beforehand). Seems like its kind of up to the whims of the economy. If I could teach anywhere there, definetely Jakarta (allthough the place truley is a pit).

Most Indonesian girls like to walk around the air-conditioned shopping malls for fun. The rest of the city is so hot and steamy and just foulish smelling.. that it actually didn't take much to get me to go there (usually I have an aversion to shopping malls).

Oh, a plus side.. in the billiards halls.. they actually employ women to play against you. So if you are bored.. just show up and you can play against a hot chick.

Another plus. Its a very musical culture. I heard good music everywhere.. and people are very musical in nature. Lots of both genders play in bands and play guitar and everything else. One night in one bar, I was listening to an all female rock band playing and switching to Brazilian to Indonesian to British to American to whatever music.. very impressive! Plus they sing well!

So many positivies about Indonesia.. but just something about it turned me off where I much prefer elsewhere in SouthEast Asia over it. But for those willing to go and live and work there.. its definetely filled with lots of plusses.

I'm with Rapier. Second left.

Anyway, anyone headed there can find all these girls working the bar and hovering around the pool table together with a friendly mix of mostly European and Australian expats here.
