Wrong.

Technically, I am wrong, but when I saw what those guys had to do to pop the lock off my door (not a conventional lock, but one of those fancy electronic ones), it came to my attention that you'd need some heavy-duty tools and you'd need to know what you're doing. Hell, there was only one locksmith who was even willing to do the job, as most simply didn't have the equipment for it. There're also cameras in the elevators, so if someone broke in, they better do a damn good job of concealing what they've got.

It's not impossible. Sure. But they'd have to come prepared.

As you know, I have the same lock you do.

I just replaced the original provided batteries yesterday (Bexel brand batteries really suck -- didn't last long).

You should have seen the hell I went through to change the lock on my 125cc Daelim when I lost the only key there was. Two locksmiths (from two different companies) spent a total of 6 hours trying to make new keys. Finally, one of them took the lock out of the mini glovebox, took it to his office, and broke it apart to create a new key from that.

Then my old key turned up. Rolling Eyes

My school is changing the locks tomorrow. I will have two locks instead of just one (there are two locks but I only have the key to one). Hopefully that will keep them out, my last lock sure didn't!!

My lock was changed today (finally), but I think someone went back into my place during the week. I'm missing another PS2 game that I'm sure was there last Friday. I counted all of my games Friday night and I was wondering why someone in Korea would take NHL 2003 and not GTA, but now that's gone too. If anyone saw someone around my house durring the week, let me know.

i was told its about 30,000 won a month for theft and fire insurance.

too bad its only available on a three year contract, but the insurance follows you wherever you reside in korea.

Is this a recent problem? What buildings are being hit the hardest? I lived in Seoul for 2 years and never had any problem with theft and really no worries of it being a possibility. There is a good chance that I will be making Bundang my next destination when I return to Korea in October (18 hour flight here I come...yay!), but the posts I have seen here have me a bit wary. Shocked

BTW - Derrek, I checked out your site to get some pictures of Bundang (put some on there will ya?!), and found it very amusing....can't believe the hair cutting pic...

There are some of the Sunae area. Hard to find (really need to clean up my page). Go to the "my apartment pics" link listed on the first page, then scroll down to the "building pics" under the linked page.

"The Hood" starts near Sunae Station (accross from the Royal Palace) and continues past Jeongja station. It is also known as Jeongja i (2)-Dong...

another one bites the dust in the ghetto.

was robbed.

talked to the locksmith

1) they can make a key by putting mold or something in the key hole

2) He's been to jeongja area at least a half dozen times since chuseok to change the locks (all ESL teachers)

3) Jeongja, break ins are common more than anywhere else in Bundang

4) Apparently all the buildings in these neighborhodds were made with the cheapest locks available and can be broken in quite easily,( a poorly made key filed down will work)

5) damn hagwon makin me pay for my new lock if i want it changed

Ok, anyone who finds molding substance in their lock should know they will be hit very soon, and call the police for a steak-out.

coulter you dont happen to work at YES do you?

I used the locksmith that installed the locks for several of the teachers at that hagwon.

i think its the kids from the local highschool or middle school. locksmith and some korean friends think it couple possibly be an inside job someone that would know the locations of esl teachers. ( I was the only one hit, my friend downstairs got hit about 5 months ago)

no passport or id's were taken, but my change bin and emergency cash were taken, about 100,000 all together. they didnt bother with my laptop cause i had it locked.

Derrek, sorry i cant get a pic up but i could try and describe it.

It's got a handle about 5 inches long, a simple twist to lock it from inside.

Locksmith said its because we live in a 1 room joo-tek. Less of a chance if you live in the bigger villa's and apts due to security gurads.
