A colleague of mine summed up Michael Breen's presentation nicely with the comment 'It was an after-dinner type speech'. There were a lot of anecdotes and jokes and he was very much playing to his audience on the theme of how perplexing and frustrating our encounters with Korean society and people can be. There were nuggets of good analysis in there as well of course.
Question time at the end inevitably opened the floor for the lunatic fringe to air their various grievances and for smart-alec's to make everyone think 'What a nob'. One wag even came up with the time old 'hilarious' comment 'Why do Koreans think their food is spicy?'. Oh how we laughed
Luckily time was over before it turned into a spoken-word version of worst bits of the General Discussion Forum. |

There was a mini get-together on Sat day night? Oh h-e-double hocky sticks. And me and the great toad were floating around itaewon at that same time and everything ...well maybe next year....
A yeah I do agree that the Q and A session for that lecture looked like it was the beginnings of an oh so typical b*tchfest for foreigners living in Korea including a retread of the the same tired stuff that people are constantly spewing out cue like broken records (thank god the time factor made quick work of some of those negative pathetic losers)... |
