Universities hire a few months in advance. Hagwons tend to hire a few weeks to a month in advance.

What are your qualifications? Based on your age, I'm assuming that you have a B.A. and nothing else.

I want to add that although colleges and universities usually hire a fair amout of time in advance, often the job is filled within days after the job is advertised.

When I was back in the USA, I applied to some jobs whose adds were only a couple of weeks old and was told that the postions had already been filled.

So, after that, I applied to the first job on the list. And I have done that with all three of my jobs. My first 2 were in colleges. 2 colleges, 2 years each. And my 3ed job is a uni job. I am into my 2ed year here.

Because of email and phone interviews, and fax machines, things can go very fast.

From the time a job add was posted, until they said I had it was

1st job, 7 days

2nd job, 3 days

3ed job, 5 days

.

My point was and is that it isn't nearly as significant as some people like to claim it is as long as you are the most qualified person they interview.

Prosodic has experience with being in Korea, so I'd respect what he has to say. However, he fails to truly emphasize the big reason why he or other adoptees/kyopos may have found it easy to find jobs right now: EXPERIENCE.

That seems to be the major kicker here if you're ethnically korean. You need either 1-2 years of experience or a degree from an Ivy League. I've found it incredibly hard to find a job since I came here in September. I have a BS, TESOL, no exp. The reason is definitely discrimination.

When I call them on the phone and we talk about my resume and everything, they're ready for an interview. But once I tell them that I'm Korean, it's "oh sorry, the school only wants native teachers". Explaining that I was born and raised in America never helps. And the reason I tell them over the phone instead of trying to convince them through an interview is to save myself the time. Once they see me, it's over. They only want caucasian. Not all, but most of the schools are like that. Therefore, I only call up the jobs that have KYOPO in the title.

Thus, based on the experiences of Prosodic and his friends and my own and my friends, I hypothesize that:

If you're:

1) ethnically Korean with no experience, it will be hard.
2) ethnically Korean with 1-2 years exp or MS, it will be easy.
3) bilingual Korean with or without exp, it will be easy.
4) Korean female with or without exp, it will at least be easier than #1.
5) caucasian with or without exp, it will be VERY easy.
6) caucasian female with or without exp, it will be SUPER easy. (But beware the jobs that say: PT 2mil won, to teach CEO, female caucasian only, under 27yrs, send photo.)

*This is assuming that you're only looking at positions in Seoul and no kindy (like me).

Just want to say that there is no bitterness here, just that the system sucks (only because I'm on the losing end Wink ) Sorry for the long post... Rolling Eyes
