How can you afford to live in Korea and Not teach privates?

Why would I want to teach privates, my free time is far more valuable to me than the paltry amount of money you get. 30,000 or 40,000 per hour is not much when you consider travel time (two ways), prep time, & the stress of teaching only 1 or 2 students at a time.

Privates - no thank you I have better things to do.

Korean University students that can't speak a word of English are teaching English private lessons and in many cases are making more money than native speakers. So I think MANY Koreans teach private lessons.

Also,

If you are work for a Real Company in Korea you recieves raises that at least meet the inflation rate.

Plus if you are a korean and work for a University your pay is more about 5 times more than a foriegners.

Don't get me wrong I value my freetime and would never dream of teaching a private lesson. But I am also dirt poor.

You seem to know the situation in Korea very well. Well, the Korean university students can speak a few words of English if they are teaching English.

For Housing Rentals, Foreigners Easy Victims

Foreign scholars merit equal status
Foreign professors do most of the heavy lifting in terms of course loads, devoting themselves almost exclusively to teaching. Nevertheless, they tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc. Moreover, when hundreds of Korean scholars enjoy such perks at American and other foreign universities, something is obviously amiss.

Foreigners Experience Difficulties in Living in Korea

College Tutors Can Earn 60,000-100,000 Won Per Hour
Part-time tutors are being offered a handsome 60,000-100,000 won per hour, making those jobs very appealing. Last summer vacation alone, Jung tutored students for one month and made 15 million won. Even though college students are not required to declare their tutoring incomes, outrageously high tutoring rates are illegal and the Ministry of Education can either fine or shut down such operations.

With the college exam near, top tutors can name their price
With the CSAT just eight days off (Nov. 6), high-cost private tutoring is rampant. In the Gangnam area, in particular, students and parents pay up to 10 million won for "premium private tutoring."

real reality...I don't get you. You post all these articles and statistics but you never have an argument or anything of your own to say. If you had an argument and then used one of those articles to back it up, that would be cool. Otherwise, it's pretty lame.

Privates are easy. In general, they want conversation and nothing else. The privates I have prepare what they want me to tutor them with, pick me up and drop me off (or pay for transportation), pay very good money, and require very little prep time. Damn, I hate getting paid $40/hour!!
