Am I the only Western woman who takes offense to this question? Yes I realize that Asian women are appealing to most men- what's not to like? However, I don't feel like a living breathing pile of sh** so much that I couldn't get laid (if I wanted to) just because I'm Western. I've only been here less than two weeks, and I've picked up on a lot of this hype revolving around Western women being ugly, and I think it's mostly a fallacy. I'll admit, when I pass some Korean women in the streets they giggle and talk about me and I have no clue what they're saying. I know my students think my freckles are strange and that I have a funny nose. My students and Korean co-workers also tell me I'm beautiful and I see both Korean and foreign men check me out. I'm not up myself, I'm just sure that if I wanted to laid I'd have no problem. I'm also sure the same goes for the other uniquely attractive foreign women in Korea.
To answer your question: My fiance lives in Australia. It's been 4 months. (probably partly to blame for my disposition ) |
Chances are, the giggling isn't malicious at all. I wish someone had told me this during my first few months here... It may even be somehow related to you, like one of them daring the other one to say "hi" to you in English. Why that makes them giggle so much, I don't know... but don't worry that's it's because of how you look or anything negative like that.
Hope you get to see you fiance soon! |

Well put Dee.
I think there are lots of Korean men that are attracted to western women, but a lot of them don't know how to approach us, and either come on too strong (the stalk and smother routine as a friend described it) or they're just tongue tied.
I do think a lot of women that have been here a while lose a certain ammount of self confidence though. |
I'm happy to say that this hasn't been my experience. I came to Korea as a married lady, and I fully intended to live a monastic life. However, this has been much more difficult than I expected. I've been approached (or run at) by Westerners and a few Koreans as well. I've found that it's a lot more difficult here to be single/celibate, actually, since travelling tends to loosen people's inhibitions a little. I'm much more reserved nowadays than I would be at home in Canada. |

I think it really depends on what you're looking for. I think if you just want a hookup, then yeah, no problem. Lots of beer and a trainsient lifestyle create the perfect environment for random hookups.
I just think it's much tougher if you are looking for something a little more long term maybe. After all, if you are planning on staying only here a year, are you really planning on declaring your boyfriend when you get to customs? I think most of us would say...no.
I do know 2 couples who met here and one got married to each other just 5 months after they met. So what do I know really? Could just be a matter of luck... |
