Advenutemen is like the spoiled little kid in my 4 PM class who will do what he has to, just to get attention. Yeah, let's keep giving him what he wants ...
But thanks, dude, I made a little joke about not being able to remember what Remebrance Day was for, and then equating it with Peppero Day, and you my frind took the heat off of me ...
For the record, as an Amercian and despite what the avatar might imply, there were several wars there that I am glad that Canada and the US stood next to each other on, even though I oppose most wars that I see ... let me give gratitude to any of your relatives that died in them, or even friends of distant relations. |

"The annual Commonwealth Service of Remembrance, at which the countries of the Commonwealth commemorate their war dead, will be held at the Anglican Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Nicholas (also known as the Anglican Cathedral) on Sunday 14th November. The Service will begin promptly at 10.15 am.
"All members of the British and Commonwealth Communities are most welcome to attend. A collection will be taken in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
"After the Service, all members of the congregation are invited to join His Excellency Mr and Mrs Warwick Morris for some light refreshment at the Residence."
- From an email I just got from the embassy. |

Me too!! What unit were you in? RCR in da' house!!! Booyah!!
As for that adventureman character, he might be impressed to know that the PPCLI are the ONLY foreign unit to be given a (U.S) presidential citation for their valoUr in Korea.
I could trash talk the US Army all I want, no lack of material there, but it would be in poor taste considering the date.
This reminds me of an anecdote I read in a magazine interview with Jay Mohr, a former SNL member and comedian. He was doing his stand up show and made a crack along the lines of: "Canada helped us in the war. Hey Canada, thanks for the sandwiches!" After the show he was approached by an angry CF member and told with explitives "Get a @#$% history book ...etc". So anyway, he says he read up on it and he said he didn't realize how much Canada participated in the World Wars. At the end of the Second World War Canada had the third largest navy and the fourth largest army (not counting the surrendered Japanese and Germans).
But, then again, the war would not have been won at all if it weren't for the Russians. |

You really are an ignorant *beep*, aren't you? |
Who are calling a *beep* you *beep* hippie? |
Yep adventureman, you sure are dumb. We fought in WW1 for three more years than Americans (we started in 1914, unlike you wimps that wiated until 1917), and WW2 for 2 years longer than the Americans (started in 1939). Also fought in the Korean War ... Sorry, just assuming that you're American.
Sorry, we skipped out on America's Wars of Imperialsim ... Viet Nam (although, may have sent some engineers or something like that) and Iraq. Yeah, yeah, I know, those wars weren't/aren't about American imperialism. You were just saving all good, God-fearing, deomcracy-loving Westerners. |
Sorry, but despite you immature name calling I'm still not totally convinced a Canadian has ever been in possession of a firing arm...can someone start posting some links PLEASE?? |

11th November 1965.
Rhodesia declares itself independent from England. In the following war, many thousands are killed.
Lest we forget those who died protecting freedom and civilisation:
http://www.mazoe.com/ROH_A_C.html
you will notice that manny more blacks fought to preserve the just government of Rhodesia than whites...defeating the whole racism idea... |

| Did you guys meet at the War Memorial? How did that go? I was half planning to go, but had to stay in to let the real estate guy show our apartment to someone. I did observe a moment of silence at 11:11, however. |

Interesting. First you boast about Canada's extensive involvement in the last great war of the old imperial era -- World War I: The British Empire and it's commonwealth subjects together with France (and it's colonials) and the Russian Empire vs. Imperial Germany, The Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire -- A war that could easily be known as "The Last Great Imperialistic Conflict to End All Imperialistic Conflicts", while at the same time criticizing American "wimps" for not getting involved in this imperialistic extravaganza until 1917. And then you have the gall to put on an air of superiority for not getting involved in Vietnam because it was just too imperialistic for your tastes. Good one.
I don't blame you for not fighting in America's imperialistic wars, but after spending so many years fighting wars as a pseudo-colonial lap-dog to Britain and it's imperialistic endeavors, there's nothing to be high and mighty about, my friend. We Americans may get caught up in imperialistic endeavors, but at least they are our own imperialistic endeavors, not someone elses. |

Oh please shut up. This is so inappropriate. Seriously -- not everything has to boil down to a fight between Americans and Canadians. ¥ ¥. It's Remembrance day, folks -- don't start a war over it! |

OK, I see. Remembance Day = A day when Canadians can call Americans names and make ridiculously hypocrital remarks, and I have to shut up and not say anything because, after all, it's Rememberance Day! Yeah, ok, whatever...
I'm not the kind of guy who goes looking for an arguement, and this is my first post on this thread, so you know I'm not the one who started the name calling. And since it's Rememberance Day and all, why are Canadians saying such things, if this is such a sacred holiday for you? |

If you find one negative comment I've ever said about Americans and show it to me, I promise you I will apologise. It isn't my style, nor my intention on this thread now.
This thread was not started to attack Americans -- adventureman chose to attack Canadians in it, and what followed from there was inappropriate, possibly on both sides of the issue. I didn't have the time or the inclination to quote everyone, just the last post which involved both you and newbie. |

"In Flander's Fields"
By John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
