I hate this, too. Finally we started using www.tourexpress.com and we get our tickets within a week of paying for them. The site's all in Korean, but man! The discounts are big!

All the travel agents were quoting us 550,000 --without tax, which was 70,000 extra!--or more for our tickets to Bangkok (leaving next week). On tourexpress we got our tickets for total of 369,000.

The travel agents in Korea do this because they buy out huge blocks of tickets from the airlines. These they sell as the infamous Package Tours. What they can't sell to the groups, they sell to individuals a week before the departure date.

I'd be in favor of limiting the number of tickets an individual agency can buy, though I know neither the airlines nor the agents would ever let this happen.

I went directly through the airlines last time and got a rate better than that of the travel agents.

The Hub of Asia (or Hub of Northeast Asia) requires international guests (and some residents) to get assistance from a native to do many things. Why? Is it just the language?
