I agree with everything "Ya-ta" said. The language can be a hassle. You can just point at other people's food! I learnt a few characters for food, such as "fish," "chicken," and "noodles." Then I'd just point to the characters on the menu if there was zero English. Or I got a local (like someone at work) to write what I wanted sometimes.

You can learn these when you go to a grocery store as the food package will usually show English along with the Chinese. Of course, having a local friend makes everything easier.

In Taipei at least, not sure about elsewhere, there are quite a few places that have English on the menu or some spoken. And, there are "buffet" type places where you just choose from the grub you see.

Also, if needed, buy a gas cooker, and cook at home.

December/January was cool in my apartment. Otherwise, it was hot and humid indeed.

And watch out for those "flying" c--kroaches! They are big and dirty and sometimes bugged the hell out of me.

It's crowded and hectic and dirty in the concrete jungle city of Taipei, but a half hour away can be quite nice. Try to find a quiet area if you go there.

I did find the Taiwanese women (and most guys too) quite friendly though. Not really indifferent, but often curious and quite amiable. One could make a good friend or even partner there.

And the money you can make is not bad. And it can boring, but that means you will have less to spend money on. You could save up to or possibly more than 10 grand in a year, similar to (potential) savings in Korea.

Also, if you like to watch TV, like I do, especially movies... in Taipei I had, I believe, five movies channels (HBO, Cinemax....), ESPN, and a few other good channels. No shortage there. I even bought a used TV in fine condition for about $35. That made for some cheap nights on the sofa. (and if you like baseball... Taiwanese love it! so lots of MLB to watch)

Avoid the beer!
