Yeah...I kind of like the increased speed that the sony offers. But, does it have wireless networking support?

If it doesn't, just buy a pcmcia wireless networking card and slot it into a free pcmcia port. This option doesn't have to be part of your final decision.

*1 CPU speed will be reduced under certain operating conditions.
*2 By removing two pre-installed 256 MB memory module and adding two 512 MB memory modules.
*3 High-speed/Full-speed/Low speed compatible.
*4 Does not support MagicGate copyright protection technology.
*5 MagicGate copyright protection technology cannot be applied to Memory Stick PRO.
*6 Deploying IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g products on the same wireless network may reduce the communication speed due to radio interference. Taking this into consideration, the IEEE 802.11g products are designed to reduce the communication speed to ensure communication with IEEE 802.11b products. When the communication speed is not as fast as expected, changing the wireless channel on the access point may increase the communication speed.
*7 The fast wireless LAN technology, "Super G," developed by Atheros Communications, Inc. enables faster wireless communications among compatible devices.
*8 The communication speed varies depending on the distance between communication devices, existence of obstacles between such devices, the device configuration, the radio conditions, and the software in use. In addition, communication may be cut off depending on the radio conditions.
*9 This product may only function with a genuine Sony battery designed for this model.
*10 Estimated battery life. When the power-saving mode is on. Actual battery life may vary with different operating conditions and settings. Battery life under JEITA Battery Run Time Measurement Method (ver.1.0) is approximately 1hour for PCGA-BP2NY.
For further details, please visit vaio-online.sony.com.
*11 Warranty conditions may vary by region.

If you want it, or need it, and can afford it, then get that one. There'll always be somebody telling you about the better model and the better deal, but that one seems pretty decent.

Um I work for the company that makes that laptop, no one here uses the R...the T series laptop is the one we issue to all of our employees.

Am I the only one who thinks you could have answered the question Derrek posed? Maybe you only are in the "model number naming" department?

I apologize if I sounded bad, and didn't answer his question...I can't honestly say I know prices. I can say that since most IT people at IBM here at this location in Phoenix, AZ use the T series...I would suggest the guy rethink the R series....from what I've heard, the T is just made better. Again, sorry if I came off sounding like a know it all... Embarassed

No worries....I was kidding. I thought it was funny that an IBM dude rings in with something that wasn't asked, but didn't answer the real question. Wink

On that note, perhaps the naming schemes different for Asia from the west? My monitor has a name in Korea, but the same model in the west has a different name. Maybe the same with laptops?

Isn't IBM exiting the PC business?

There's no question that the future of IBM will be serivces.

The T series case is actually made out of magnesium+plastic (upper case), and the lower case is out of titanium+plastic

Next year's ThinkPads will probably be IBM designs, with the only difference being that Lenovo gets to build them.

Lenovo wants to expand globally to compete with Dell and other big players, so I would expect them to heavily commoditize the ThinkPad series. Should this happen, I expect there to be more mainstream ThinkPads along the same lines and quality of the T series.

Whether the T series stays as a quality premium product, I have no idea....I suspect the Txx series quality will drop. I don't expect it to go into the gutter or anything. It will still likely be better than others, but I would bet that now we all get Chinese instead of Thai keyboards, return policy will likely be changed (esp on dead pixels), and I would also imagine that the level of ease of dealing with parts replacement and other things like that will go down. We won't likely be able to talk right to our rep and will get directed to general pools and will have routine 45 minute waits for tech support.

EDIT *the bottom of t42s are not made from titanium, they are made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic...t40s have the titanium bottoms.

This is a valid point! It seems the coms sold here in Asia are not the same seris as the ones in the US. This goes for the Sony, too. If I search Amazon for either of the model numbers that I might buy in Thailand it comes up w/ no results! Confused
