You think that's bad, you should see a North Korean newspaper.

Kim Jongil sees music concert
Kim Jongil gives two rare white tigers to North Korean living in Japan
Politicians from other countries send congratulations to KJI on his birthday (followed by congratulations from Russia, Tajikistan, and Nigeria I believe)

Did you hear about the recent explosion there? Family members saved pictures of Kim Jong-il BEFORE their relatives. Gosh, so pathetic.

The Australian media is the same. Always has been. The night before the great horse and Australian icon Phar Lap won a prestigious race, the Australian media had two headlines ready in the event of a win or a loss.

1. Australian horse wins the great race.

2. New Zealand horse loses the great race. (Phar Lap was born in NZ)

We also always hear about "Aussie Mel Gibson", how our troops are single-handedly winning the war in Iraq, and how any foreign celebrities who come to our shores immediately fall in love with us and renounce allegiance to their mother countries.

Fidel, mate, you must be a Kiwi. Jealous?

About Koreans, though, at least they have some pride, however overblown it might be. The Japanese often feel guilty about everything. Unless it's for making the world's smallest stuff.

They don't have some pride! Some pride would be fine. Quite normal.

Koreans have an idiotic, never-face-reality, believe-in-the-ridiculous, jingoistic kind of pride.

Yeah...australians get quite swept away in stupid crap sometimes, especially entertainment stuff. Good on all the Aussie actors and actresses(and yes I know Russell is a kiwi) but it does get a little tiring at times.

Also the countless little aussie battler stories are a dime a dozen.

Same crap different smell.

The only thing about all this Korean is the best stuff is their constant obsession with statistics and their ranking in the world in bloody everything.

Well everytime I read any of the 4 main English papers here, it seems as if the Korean people are the greatest humans in the world.........look at the headlines today............

KOREAN SOCCER TEAM CRUSHES GERMANY 3-1

Korean Cell Phones to Seize Half of U.S. Market in 2005

KOREAN LIFE EXPECTANCY HITS 77

Korean Scientists Identify Gene Causing Sleep Disorders

Korean golfers invade U.S. tours

Korean Pop Star Woos Japan

Korean Wave not Slowing

KOREAN ACTRESS MAKES HOLLYWOOD A-LIST

WHY DO HOLLYWOOD LEADS PREFER KOREAN LADIES

Japanese Tourists Flock to Korea

I kid you not, these were all the headlines from today, I mean it is not just today, but everyday, if I were an alien from a different planet I would think that this country was the greatest place on earth, filled with supermen and superwomen who the world is lucky to have.............

n'est pas? Shocked

I think they lack confidence so they tend to hide behind a bit of bombast.

Maybe...there's also that story about the marine who chose to have his finger cut off before his finger. Every North Korean I met told me that their pins were a piece of their heart and that they could never lose them. Sad, maybe, but I don't know if I'd use the word pathetic. Nor is that kind of emotion exclusive to them.

It's the catch-up syndrome. They're still not over the Park Chung Hee era when the government told everyone they had to work hard and hurry to catch up with more developed nations.

Having said that, there's no sign of them losing this nationalism any time soon but maybe after the present generations are all dead??
