when i saw your post shawner i was about to comment - "pity its not a mac" - and then i read the last line... you are on the right track. the mini looks like an ideal computer for the portable expat lifestyle. i have a rather old powerbook 500 (the first titanium model) and, while it is still going strong, it is a little slow for some modern applications (garageband for instance). also i never use it as a notebook, it simply sits at home always plugged in and pretty much always online. a mini-mac and a nice flat screen would be a better option...
have an old (2nd generation) 10gig ipod too. it is always with me. bought my girlfriend a mini-ipod for xmas, with the new buttons. i prefer the more positive feel of the new buttons to the dodgy touch-sensitive buttons on my ipod. my buttons don't work with gloves, or when your hands are damp.. |

I used to have an iBook myself. Addictive thing. The design and the beauty of the OSX operating system, I found myself becoming just like those other mac addicts I used to think were weirdos. I couldn't stop looking and tinkering with it. Was almost more like art than a computer.
I sold it because the explorer version that came with it didnt work on many Korean websites...I'm guessing that's changed by now. Also, I was into games at the time and wanted some PC games they didnt make for Mac. I don't play them anymore because I get obssessed and can't stop...
Too bad the mini won't be in Korea for quite some time, I guess. That would be sweet with a Samsung 17 inch LCD. |

Because one laptop is pretty much the same size as another laptop so there are no bragging rights there and all laptops can't compare power to desktops so that's gone.
Although, now that I'm thinking about it. I guess you can brag in relation to the power of other laptops (that hadn't occured to me). |

micro$oft have not uopdates explorer for mac for about 2 years now so i don;t think there are any changes there. mac-java has been updated though and copes with most of what korean websites throw at it. i use safari, the mac browser, mostly. on the rare occasions that does not work i start up virtual pc and run windows on my mac |

Oh, I don't know, there are some pretty sweet desktop replacements out there. My personal favorite at the moment is this one...

For that price I could get this from the same site and have enough money for extras and be able to easily upgrade. |

Heh, I used to do that too...except on the iBook, VP was ultra slow and unstable. Still it worked for chatting and meeting girls on Sayclub at the time. |

That's neither here nor there. The discussion was whether laptops could compare to desktops in terms of power, not in terms of price/performance. |

hahahahaha, thats a good one.
Well I have one and it is nice to have, even though I have PC's at home.
My laptop is a DELL Latitude D800, 1.8 Centrino, 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, DVD writer, built in Wi-Fi, 15.4' screen good for watching DVD's.
Well, my camera is really cool though, check out this picture I took of the moon.

not true anymore. perhaps 5 years ago it was true, but mac software is easy to get and complete these days. |
