It's not the improving yourself that makes you less employable. It's all that aging you're doing. Totally unacceptable.
Years ago (pre-Internet) a joke ad was making the rounds that read something like this:
Hagwon Urgently Needs Replacement Teacher for Unruly Class
Seeking blonde-haired, blue-eyed American female, 22-25 years old, with MA or better, and 10 years' teaching experience. Salary commensurate with size & pertness. All applicants unable to fulfill above requirements to be treated & paid accordingly. (Please BYO Vaseline) |

If it's not way out of the realm of this thread, I'd like to ask what you all think of my possibilities for teaching there. I'm 65 - to get that out of the way. I was born in upstate NY, I have two masters degrees, an M.S. in cross disciplinary professional studies that includes IT, book design (I own a small publishing company, one man), and a M.F.A. equivalency. I've taught college for some thirteen years, none full time since it's the American way to use adjunct faculty. I have long grey hair and intend to keep it that way.
Possibilities? Questions?
Thanks all. I ask this group because there appears to be considerable honesty from my view point.
I also posted this in another thread but no response.
Thanks. |

You're eminently employable in the universities. Some make an actual effort at diversity (different nationalities, ages, etc.) plus your advanced degrees and uni experience in the US make you a shoo-in.
You should try to get some feedback on the good and bad unis. Many of the private universities have been very difficult for westerners... as much or more incompetence than the hagwons. (Sample of complaints I remember: "No photocopying allowed." "All your students must get A's, even if you never see them in class.")
And anyway, older women (I'm one) face more of the age discrimination problem than older men... Most schools do prefer to hire younger women, but after they've exhausted the young'uns, they move on up with their gender preference reversed... so older men will be more attractive to them than older women.
You'll see a lot of desperate uni jobs advertised RIGHT NOW because the Korean school year starts in March... so start looking on ESL Cafe, but again, get some feedback before you sign any contracts.

TwoNames,
I say go for it--post a resume and/or answer ads and/or contact recruiters and see what you come up with. I'm currently emailing a teacher in her 60s. I'm 53 and just got my 2nd Korean job.
