I think I mentioned before that I had the same 'excuse' for dismissal charged against me. I asked "Who?" The response; "A parent." I asked more clearly; "Which one of my student's? What class? What time??" The management said it wasn't any of my business! |
This appears to be a SOP ( Standard Operating Procedure ) with the Hagwons here in Korea. So much so, i'm even beginning to wonder whether Directors have their own school on how to skillfully engage in "illegal" & unethical business practises; with the central focus being on how to f^&k foreign English teachers ???
Your story Harvard is virtually a carbon copy of my own Bloody amazing. I of course asked my Director the same thing ... WHO ??? He named 2 ( now departed ) holy little terrors who it seems are being raised to heatedly heap their abuse on both teachers and elders alike. Having said this, i believe one of the ACES i may have up my sleeve is a written apology ( one of the only real disciplinary measures he has even taken ) which Mr. Kim instructed one poor 12 yr old hellfire princess to write me.
The 3rd young student he named was actually likeable enuff yet suffered from a serious case of the closest thing you could have to ADD. I of course one day ( 9 months ago ) half-kiddingly called him "BABO". My intention was the "silly" type of Babo, NOT crazy or stupid
I hadn't even taught this child in something like 6 months. Yet because he left a few weeks ago, i was blamed !!! He had for this duration in fact been the Australian teacher's pupil. How much more ridiculous can this get ??? Anyways, the Director's primary contention was that since he now sees both our teaching philosophies & disciplinary methods as incompatible, i was in effect costing him business. This is a point which ( only outside of the Hagwon of course ) stands as HIGHLY debatable.
Interestingly, other than these three kids, he too was both reluctant & unable to provide any actual names or further case examples.
Your advice Harvard merely confirms the careful measures i've since this time employed. 1 ) I conducted a brief poll in a majority of my classes the other day. They were politely asked to rate their instuctor on a scale of 1-10. While of course, purely un-scientific the majority of kids were genuinely favourable as to my style & prescence. 2 ) I realize phone lists are fully accessible as i'm calling up the kids @ their homes almost every night as part of the job desciption and its expected duties anyways. Oh yes, neatly photocopied lists are of course also in the works
Let's not kids ourselves. Bottom line is some Hagwons begin to operate beyond their means. There are a number of OTHER highly competitive English academies in the area. I for one am aware of how for a whole series of reasons ( and not merely the chronic failings of a single foreign teacher ) the institution has fallen short of its projected fiscal success.
As with any business, they must begin to more clearly prioritize and focus on effective cost cutting measures. Since they've now picked up a talented Aussie as part of the team, as they see it exaggerated justifications for withholding my severance salary make entirely good business $en$e.
While i'd much rather allow him to "save face" & work things out between the Director & myself, through Labour Board arbitration his cunning calculations & shallow duplicity may in the end have to find themselves accounted for |
