There are a LOT of public school jobs out there right now. Seems the new Gyeonggi do regulations are scaring away a lot of the qualified job applicants and schools have been unable to fill their openings. As the regular school semester starts in less than three weeks they are becoming a bit desperate.

While unable to budge on the basics, pay and vacation, due to Gyeonggi do's new rules, the schools are offering a lot incentives such as bonus, moving allowance, and bigger apartment, out of their own budgets.

The high school which I will probably sign with has offered me a 500k signing bonus, a 500k movement allowance, and big, brand new apartment.

Even though the new Gyeonggi do rules suck *beep*, they are still miles better than a hagwon job. Just less so then before.

How big is the apartment, and where did you sign?

I've given up trying to get a public school job.
But for anyone else who wants to give it a try,
here are the fax numbers for some province superintendent's offices:

泲: 042/582-9262, -9514
: 033/253-5335
: 062/571-9412
: 063/273-0030, -251-9240
: 064/746-0064

These aren't all of them.
You might find more by Google searching for []û.

Personally I think that the best thing to happen for gyeonngi do is that end up with a whole heap of unfilled postions and maybe improve conditions.

Here is the post where I asked about the school.

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=33389

It's a private high school like yours Derrek, though co-ed. Very nice uptodate facilities and good, supportive admin staff.

Apartment hasn't even been bought yet. Will look over several next week after I sign the contract.

Downside, or upside depend on how you look at it, to this job is that I will be first waegukin teacher the school has ever hired and will have to design the cirrculum and choose the textbooks.

The "Get Real" series worked well for me when I used it in the lower levels. Buy the teacher CDs... the book ones are incomplete.

Also, "Let's Talk 1 and 2" by Duane Vorhees.

You must be in a small city area? Wish I had a big apartment!

Read this one... if you are a newbee with no experience and just a BA, you only bring home 1.7 per month.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!

My first hagwon job was 2.2 per month with no experience!

Is it some sort of priveledge to teach longer hours and have twice as many students in a class? Give me a break!!

I really hope these school freakin' die trying to get people to take these jobs when they offer crap like this.

Anybody got a link for these high school jobs? Is there any sort of program like GEPIK/EPIK or do you just do the free agent/cold calling/agent thing?

I would stay far far far away from GEPIK\EPIK if you're interested in a public\high school job. No, I would run far far away from those programs.

For general info, try cold calling the city and provincial head offices. For jobs, unfortunately, most schools only advertise and hire through recruiters.

Sounds like a good gig, fidel, but I'm gainfully employed on the JET program in Japan until next year. I taught in the ROK from 12/01 to 5/03 and am considering heading back there after my contract is up. Some might think it is madness to want to head back to the Land of the Rising Temper, but post-JET options in Japan are pretty bleak. Too many foreigners chasing too few jobs equals pay comparable to what you guys are getting over there, but with a cost of living that's 30 or 40% higher.

So, I'm just doing a little research, although it's probably a little pointless since the market changes so fast over there. When I was there, there was no GEPIK and public school jobs outside of EPIK were a rarity; now it seems to be the biggest booming sector of the market - I just hope the vacation time and other perks don't disappear before I get there. Wink

That's the irony here... they drive down the working conditions of public school jobs and expect to fill them up when there are still plenty of good positions out there with vacancies.

Confused

Well, we're approaching, "Come to Jesus" time for a lot of these schools hoping to snag a good teacher.

They aren't finding them, and will hopefully realize that what they're offering now is borderline sucky. Some are, and are trying to make good by offering "signing bonuses" of 1,000,000 won plus settlement fee out of their own pockets. Basically, this is the recruiters' fee, but they're passing it on to you if you accept.

People don't want to work for hagwon pay/vacation/hours + 35 students in a class. Actually, the hours are longer than a hagwon when you figure in all of the waiting you do between classes.

Oh, and uh... by the way, we need a TESL/CELTA from you... yeah, right!

Please realize that what you're going to get are "purchased certificates" that aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Here's a place in Thailand:

I can virtually assure you that several more of these jobs will be open or come open after a number of teachers don't work out and bolt from them in the coming months.

Just curious... is your school offering the bonus, Fidel?
