They did. A few years ago the owner was a foreigner who was married to a Korean woman. They owned the blue monkey which has since gone out of business because the new Korean management thought fat Korean guys in their late twenties would be more of a draw than some shapely Korean babes in their early twenties. Needless to say, the bar that gobbled up their share of the market has an abundance of babes propping up its bar, as well as a really decent Korean guy who does the c.o.cktail show. (not the fat faced one who is up his own ass but the better looking one who is down to earth)
PS. The bar is Seoul Train. |

Ah, Gwangju. Spent six years living in the city. Now that I live up in Seoul, I can really appreciate the laid back nature of the city. It really is different down there. There is clearly is a vibe that Gwangju is a universe all its own and outsiders are just that, outsiders. You will never feel apart of the place no mater how hard you try. That said the people are friendly in there countyside ways, then again they can be as rude as s**t in their countryside ways.
It is pretty hard to makes good friends with the locals there too. They haven't the mind set to really be friends with foreigners, at least this is what I found.
I learnt most of what horrible Korean I speak in Gwangju, for as some other poster said, a little Korean can go along way.
Gwangju also might have one of the best downtowns for drinking. God did I drink a lot down there, and god are there a lot of bars in the downtown block. Too many bars open all night. This will burn a whole in your wallet and your brain.
I miss the number of side dishes you get with your food in Gwangju. Up here in seoul I haven't even seen spinach as a side at all.
Go to Gwangju, it is nice place, just make sure you get the hell out of the city and explore the countryside. That might be the only real redeeming quality about living there. |

| I've been in Gwangju for ...wow, 7 months! I can't believe it's been that long. Anyway, I really like it here. I was in Seoul for a year and I'm much happier here. Granted, I do have a killer job. But it's also a pretty nice town, and to be honest, I feel like I get stared at more in Seoul (in non-flattering ways) then I do here. |
