Good.

As mentioned before, the Chosun Ilbo and SBS seem to be the Faux News of Korea. Most rational people would just shrug it off, just like Fox News. But the stories pander to the rednecks in the audience -- and they tend to not react to things rationally.

I don't know where I'm going here. Confused

Immediately after the broadcast, the bulletin board on the program's website was flooded with over 1,000 furious posts.

That's down from the 6,000 netizens that cared enough to sign a petition about this last month, when the issue first broke out. I think it's fair to say that the issue is losing steam, as most hot issues tend to do in Korea, over time. And what's this been, only a month or so?

Sorry, but I don't follow your reasoning here. The 6,000 figure you refer to was as a result of a campaign over a period of time to obtain signatures on a petition. The 1,000 figure was achieved immediately following a program broadcast at 10:55 pm.

Your "losing steam" theory is based on an inference on your part that makes no sense.

Ok, for the sake for argument, let's keep track of the post count on that website. That original petition achieved the bulk of its volume in the first 7 days following the airing of the first program, and significantly dropped after that.

Funny how this board mirrors the attention-span of the Korean media. Must be emulation or something.

That, or the report's shrill alarmism worked on the wrong targets.

Not that I'm claiming this anecdotal evidence as proof of a prevailing mood in Korean culture... Or even meaning that every single last Korean, including the lovers, husbands, and wives of a number of posters here are exactly like my boss just because they're all Korean.

I mean, who would be dumb enough to do that?

Does your boss publish newspapers or produce TV programs? If not then his opinions dont matter much. But the newspapers and the TV programs make opinions - that is the problem.

Are you saying all Koreans think exactly the same like a bunch of Asian automatons? Are you involved in a relationship with a Korean? By this rational, she/ he is an anti-foreigner bigot as well.

It would not be a wholly bad thing for Korea to have a public debate about the ESL industry here. Massive amounts of money are poured into a largely unregulated industry for quite marginal results.

I do agree with your sentiment about the ESL industry in Korea, however on a large scale, we are really not that important, and in fact most of the problems we see in the ESL industry in Korea are a microcosm of larger issues at work in Korean society, such as in education and business culture.

Yeah, I'm tired of hearing all the paranoid, self-appointed doomsayers on this board.

I remember the weekend right after those pictures surfaced, I went clubbing at Hongdae. Yes, that's right folks, in midst of our darkest hour, I walked right into the belly of beast. And I was a little wary, but I figured i'd be d*mned if a bunch of Korean internet users were gonna scare me away from a good time. And do you know what I saw on the street as I walked to the club? Some young Korean guy wearing an American flag T-shirt.

I'm not an English teacher, but I'm of the right age and skin color that most Koreans assume I am. (Most Canadians assume I am, anyways). But honestly, if it weren't for this board, I wouldn't have even known that 'incident' ever ocurred.

I guess it's gonna cause English teachers some headaches at their jobs. Who knows, maybe the industry will get a little shake-up. But the fundamental demand for English teachers won't go anywhere for a while. And as far as getting beat up or killed on the street because of this stuff? That's just cowardly paranoia.

I think that koreans who know a lot of foriegners will know these "news" stories are a load of rubbish. Its the Koreans who don't or haven't had a lot of exposure to foriegners who will be more likely swayed by these stories. The media, in all countries, are pretty good at manipulating most people.

I dug it up on a google images search, but apparently the product is a Chinese product trying to pass off as a Korean one. However when I visited China, my search for it ended up futile. Too bad, because I was going to enjoy my vegetarian, animal-loving sister's reaction when I mailed her some. Smile

Good point, Ulsanchris. I just got back from two months in Canada so am catching up. I swear I'm getting the impression that quite a few Koreans are being especially kind. Because they know all the hype is a load of bunk.
At the same time I get the heebie jeebies over some, just the way they look at me. Like, aha, you dirty dog, I know about you, you low down swine, haha.
The strange thing is this polemic. Best not to get worked up at the casual drive by shooting hate stares. The whole 'rabid over injustice' thing.
Like thinking, 'well, it's official then, it's on the news'. And with that, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing

You're right, for the most part. Adult ESLers who frequent the hagwons on a regular basis probably know a few foreigners personally, and aren't gonna stereotype their friends on the basis of some SBS sensationalism. Joe Yahoo Kim, on the other hand, might believe everything he sees about way-gooks on trash TV, but at the end of the day he probably doesn't really care one way or another about the ESL industry. He'll likely just shrug the whole thing off as "well, whaddya expect from those goddam dirty waygooks" and then switch channels to catch the latest histrionics about Japanese expansionism on Dok-do.

The wild card in all of this, from the economic view, are the parents. They're big financial backers of the ESL industry, but apart from that many of them probably have a lot in common with Joe Yahoo Kim, in terms of overall worldview. They could be the one group with both the susceptibility to propagnada and the financial power to make things rough for the ESL industry.

Another story worth keeping an eye on:

K-League side Suwon Bluewings announced today that they want to bring back Brazilian striker Sandro Cardoso dos Santos from J-League side JEF United Ichihara - he was a huge fan favourite the first time round at Suwon.

However, just two weeks ago he was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in Chiba and got a 10 month suspended jail sentence. Not surprisingly a lot of (football) netziens are none-too-happy at the idea of seeing him back in Korea after the conviction.

We'll see where this one goes...
