Way too expensive. Looking for cheap real estate areas in interesting areas.
Southern New Mexico has a lot of inexpensive real estate and real low cost of living though. The major problem drawback being that crime stats are also sky high. |

I drove through Las Cruces.. and thought it was a kinda cool looking city with a lot of the southwestern architecture - adobe-looking houses.
I've never been to Silver City (I think is the name).. but read a lot of things that made me think it could be good - until I read the crime stats on it. |

Tiger Beer -
Have you checked out any other places in the Deep South: Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee? Just curious because I've considered heading down there for grad school (UGA, Vanderbilt, etc) and I was encouraged by the apparently low housing costs. |

I am okay with that! Well, if I were to buy real estate in the U.S... Corpus Christi area would be one potential place.
Probably Oregon/Washington another.. and if I was able to find the bargain of the century, then definetely Hawaii as well.

I didn't look too much in those areas. But if you go to www.realtor.com you can play around and check out actual houses and their prices.
Probably find some goldmine real estate opportunities in those areas though. |

| Housing prices aside, Tiger Beer, you'd probably like Bellingham. It's in a beautiful setting: close the ocean and bucked up against the North Cascades. Close to Canada, Seattle and everything you'd need. I've only driven through the place, but I've always been impressed. Living there, however, might be another matter. |

Funny, as BELLINGHAM is one of the top cities I've been looking at - although I've never been there either except for driving through.
I love Northwest culture though.. and Bellingham's proximity to the ocean AND mountains is a plus. Unfortunately housing costs aren't much lower than Portland Oregon, so no real benefit over it.
Bellingham WA, Portand OR, Corpus Christi TX, Hilo HI, and Honolulu HI are the 5 places I seem to be looking at the most. Granted Honolulu is pretty much financially out of the question, but no harm in looking. |

| San Antonio or the hill country to the west is a far better value tiger than corpus. Corpus is a lousy town that is also a prime hurricane target. I wouldn't buy any land on the gulf/atlantic coasts because many areas are way overdue for a big hurricane. |

Okay I know this is out there but what about Guam or the American Samoa?
More reasonably, I hear that the oceanside counties north of Sacramento are booming.... |

Canals!!??!! That sounds kinda cool!

Maybe I should look more at prices on San Padre Island and Brownsville area.. if the prices aren't too high already.

| It sounds like you need to decide if you want to live in a place or just do business there. Portland and Bellingham are highly desireable (read, expensive), while KY and WVA are not. The differences between Corpus Christi and, say, Morgantown can be enormous culturally and economically |
What is Morganstown like exactly? It does seem to come up on www.findyourspot.com and the prices are quite low. I don't think it would be so good for the REAL long-term however because of the weather alone (not all that different from Michigan).

the crime rate is average...but from what I read, the town is all about ex-hippies growing pot. Not my scene. |
I guess that one wasn't the crime stats. I just looked it up again, and it was a series of other things - sounds extremely dull and boring, in the middle of nowhere, and essentially a retirement community for older folks - which I guess is why its popular in the retirement websites.
I also saw it on a search engine on www.hippy.com and even the hippies didn't like it - even though it was a hippy destination spot - which isn't my scene either.

San Antonio does have very low real estate prices. However I was just reading that the haves and have-nots is relatively severe and quite segregated. That probably means the cheaper housing I was looking at is probably in the more 'guetto' areas of the city - so since have written it off.
Regarding hurricanes.. that could be a plus for me. It would mean real estate is cheaper, plus if had insurance on rented properties, and something happened, seems like people are usually better off because of it.

I am not sure about those two islands - but I was once looking at Saipan when I ran across www.saipansucks.com which gave me a really good insight into what it *could* be like to live in any of those islands.
The oceanside counties north of Sacramento? You mean the ones like Mendocina up to Eureka and the Redwood Highways? |
