I believe the great mystery of someone not loving oldboy was solved over at the Marmot's Hole yesterday:
| Quote: |
You know hes just pissed because the last real work he ever got was on a Korean project. They probably said something like, Youre getting a part in the film with the biggest budget in history! This could be a launching board to amazing things! Then they edited him out for the American release, the film was the biggest flop in history, and he was branded an ass-clown for being in it. His statements are undeniably motivated by anger and we all know exactly why he is angry at Koreans; he sees them as having sabotaged his career! Although, he should be clever enough to make a distinction between the Moonies and the general Korean populace. Man I hate Moonies

Of all time, or Korean films?
I for one think OLDBOY is one of the five best films since 2000, the others being BATTLE ROYALE, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and maybe OASIS or WONDER BOYS.
It's one of those films that benefits from repeated viewings, not that I really expect people who didn't like it to give it another go. |

It wouldn't make my top 50 movies of all time but I do think it's an awesome film and my favorite K-movie after Memories of Murder. |

For me, from the 80 odd Korean films I've seen, roughly:
1. OLDBOY
2. OASIS
3. MEMENTO MORI
4. CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST
5. NO COMMENT
6. SPRING, SUMMER, FALL...
7. ROAD MOVIE
8. PUBLIC ENEMY
9. A FAMILY
10. THE SCARLET LETTER
(Yes, I'm a compulsive list maker!) Of those listed, I'm sure that NO COMMENT, A FAMILY and THE SCARLET LETTER would recieve the most raised eyebrows. Eh, I stand by them. |

| I thought the movie was ok. I liked the ending, although I didn't think the back story of what happened back in High School was too strong. Choi Min-Shik was also fine, but I don't think his acting took too much of a stretch. He seemed like he was just playing the part of a Korean adjossi for the most part, being drunk in the police station, trying to piss in garbage cans and losing his temper over and over again. I can see why people back home might think this was a phenomenal acting acheivement, but when you see this everyday from almost everyone, I can't say that it must have been all that hard to pull off. |

Of course.
I like it myself, but I don't think it would even make my Top 50 list. |
As of Right Now, 'Oldboy' would be included in my Top 5. That could change next week, but ever since I've seen it (2 years ago this May) it's been on my mind. I'm enthralled by it.
It's become my bloody 'Star Wars'.
I think it cracks Top 50 for me based solely on its score.
