Fine, can I just say it's effin' dumb then?
Cuz I think it is.

(Oddly the exception seems to be "French Canadian", although people in Quebec would just say Quebecois. The French here seem to want to distance themselves from France French.) |
I think the reverse has always been more true (despite de Gaulle's silly antics). Whereas the pied-noirs were reviled, they were at least seen as essentially of the same species. French Canadians? Surely less French than Afrikaners are Dutch in the eyes of the "old" country. |
The Quebecois see themselves as something of a superior breed of French Canadian. I mentioned once to a pure laine (pure wool, a term Quebec french like to call themselves, to celebrate the pureness of their Korean... errr Quebecois blood) French coworker that my home town of Windsor had a fairly large French Canadian community.
"They do not speak real French," was his rather off hand opinion of the quality of Belle River French and the prospects of finding any bon homme de frere-hood in such a location.
I mean, yes, Belle River French is a gutter tongue of a gutter tongue and anyone trying to speak to a Montrealer in Belle River French would be assumed to have syphilis. But it was kind of funny in light of that Quebecois French is considered by the Parisians as a French fit for grave diggers and charwomen and nothing more. |

Better!
Hey, what Chinese New Year's parade would be complete without the traditional Ronald McDonald float!!

I wouldn't be too sure about harvard grads or towering IQs, not at the hands-on creative level. Certainly budgets and resources to kill for. Frankel is the agency that does McD's consumer promotion, and they handle Whirlpool and GM in N. America and some other biggies. I don't know if they did that website though. I'd be kinda surprised.
An awful lot of corporate PR looks dumb from nearly ever angle, and we're often wondering who the hell it's aimed at. But I didn't see anything on the website in the OP that really shocked me, other than the fact that McDonald's or any company would trademark "I Am Asian"... To me, "dumb" isn't the word.... "exceedingly distasteful"? "Repugnant"? Something more along those lines. |

Some Japanese PM theorized once that if Japanese ate burgers they would eventually have white skin and blond hair. |

This site is legit.
I can picture the McDonald's PR board meeting now...
McDonalds PR Director: Ok guys, according to this demographic survey, Asians are the fastest growing minority in North America. Our survey also tells us that Asians eat at McDonald's far less than any other target group in our survey mm'kay. We know that obese white trash and the mentally retarded are first and second, but we need to figure out a way to get Asians in the top 5 mm'kay. Any ideas?
Suit #1 - Well, we could start selling Chinese food at our restaurants
PR Director - Uhmm, good suggestion but there are 2 things you should keep in mind mm'kay. One - Asian people come from many different countries and a b@stardized version of Chinese food only caters to a very small cross-section of all Asian-North Americans mmm'kay. Second, our food is shiite so there would be no possible way we could create an edible menu that Asians would actually enjoy more than what they could make themselves or buy at real Asian restaurants mmm'kay.
Suit #2 - Wait! I got it! We can run a massive PR campaign to make it look like we actually care about these strange Asian cultures. We'll make a website highlighting holidays and special events in each of their respective countries making it sound as if we actually give a flying *beep* about "diversity" and "cultural awareness."
Finally we'll organize parades and celebrations on their traditional holidays where we'll replace sacred symbols and ancient customs with Ronald McDonald, the golden arches and happy meals! Sure it will be a slap in the face, but we'll sell thousands of Big Mac's!
PR Director - That's brilliant! Undo your belt so i can get on my knees and lick your balls.
Suit #2 - Haha. That's funny sir
PR Director - I'm not kidding.

Den Fujita mentioned that in a marketing meeting in 1971. He was the president of McDonald's Japan, not the PM of the government.

| When I was a kid I used to mash up ice cream until it was basically a soup, then put vinegar in it. But you're right, ketchup is worse- not as bad as HP Sauce, but worse than vinegar. |
