Thank you to everyone who answered the initial posting. Your responses have been very enlightening.
"Gay friendly" was probably not the best word choice on my part. I'm totally not expecting some kind of utopian Korean San Francisco, and PDA isn't really my style anyway. And as a product of the small-town U.S. South, I'm totally used to narrow-mindedness, conservatism, and people thinking that their communities couldn't possibly harbor a homosexual.
I guess I was just wondering about the extent to which Korean gays are aware of and quasi OK with their own gayness. I'm not a real big fan of cavorting with closeted married people who mislead their spouses, nor do I particularly want to become a novelty for the "curious" who want to "experiment" before settling down to heterosexual marriage. But my motive for coming to Korea isn't to find a Korean lover either. Although most of my friends in the States are straight, and I don't expect that to change in Korea, it would still be nice to have some gay Korean "friend friends" to hang out with once in a while.
Oh well. It's reassuring to know that neither my gayness nor my alcoholism and mental illness will raise eyebrows in Korea.
