Incheon is a very large city of about 4 million. It's not just a port. Most of it is a large bedroom community although there are a lot of industrail parts to the city. Also close to transportation for travel.

Medical check ups are pretty much standard for public school gigs. Though a lot cheaper to get in country.

Incheon...The Port City of Korea.

The City of Sailors. Sailors from the Four Corners of the World and all the Seven Seas. Sailors singing their ancient sea shanties, and talking their salty-dog talk down on the waterfront.

Don't know how them lily-livered landlubbers get on, but for us with bilge water in our blood, it's all about "Weigh the anchor!" and "Shivers me timbers!" and "Which one of you skallywags pilfered my treasure map!" (Just keep a keen eye peeled for pirates! "Arrrrrr!" says I!)

I don't like the poll. Where's the Option for:
"No. I've got a university job so EPIK would be a step down."

I know that is the general idea behind the last option, but it would be nice if there were more options between yes and hell no.

Stat,

That info about shared accomodation is a little weird. The Korean Embassy and the EPIK office both have nothing to do with choosing your city or accomodation. Your assigned province chooses your city/town and your school finds your apartment. The provinces haven't figured out who is going where yet. They never do until the last minute which is why EPIKers are only told their placements in orientation. Renewals of contracts haven't even been worked out yet so they don't know where they need teachers.

There were several couples this past year that managed to have shared accomodation. Your schools will just have to work together to find and furnish the apartment. It's common to have 2 EPIK teachers in the same city; it's just not common to have 2 at the same school.

This past year's Incheon post wasn't even in the main city. It was on the island. It wasn't at a school either. Incheon is close to Seoul though if that's important to you. It's on the subway line.

crazylemongirl: thanks for giving more info about Inchon as a city. What is a 'bedroom community' though?

JongnoGuru: oor arr me matey, shiver me timbers and splice them sails.

prosodic: oops, sorry, have taken it on board and will make a note of it for next time.

No L: Thank you very much. We had a gut feeling that it was a little weird. We'd had a call from the Korean embassy at 10am one morning, saying that the Korean EPIK had been trying to get in toch with us - tho they'd emailed just 5 hours and 13 minutes before. I figured that someone relatively high up in EPIK saw that not many people had applied to Inchon, and so had told everyone to try to get applicants to change their preferred POEs. Ar eyou an EPIKer then? How's it been for you?

Think we'll just tell them 'If it's Inchon or nothing, we'll take our chances with another organisation thanks'... unless someone really rallies behind Inchon over Gwangju soon Razz

Thanks everyone who replied, we appreciate it. I know from experience how comfortable everything can seem once you've got the job, and it's easy to forget how hard it is when you were looking.

The xrays aren't necessary. They're just looking for healthy lungs. the average TB test will do if I remember that one correctly.

As for a good POE, gyungsangbukdo is good. most everyone has had a good placement with a few exceptions.
As for Incheon, they're accepting a huge number of candidates because they're developing an english village (this is what I heard) the accomodations are not directly on the subway line but they are really nice.
