I would never in a million years sign a contract if they weren't going to reimburse me for the airfare within the first few weeks of my arrival. No freakin' way would I sign an "EPIK or GEPIK" airfare loan contract where they wait 6 months to pay you.

EPIK and GEPIK both reimburse airfare after arrival. They call it an airfare "loan". The loan is then waved [sic] if you stay six months.

Derrek,
I think you misunderstood No L.
EPIK pays you for the flight to Korea within about a week of your arrival.

The six month 'loan' just means that if you quit in the first six months of the contract, they make you pay the airfare back. If you last the six months and then quit, you don't 'owe' them anything.

Ah, ok. I know I have heard of places withholding airfare and taking deposits to stop runners.

For pete's sake people,

Gord has an excellent point here. He asked a clear and quite valid question: did the OP actually read or was he actually told that the flight was paid up front or did he assume it was based on his previous job(s)?

If it is option 1 then he assumed and does not really have a leg to stand on. Forcing the school's hand at this point would be stupid. Reimbursed airfare is more and more common in jobs here. Schools are simply protecting themselves from unscrupulous teachers. Of course the reimbursed airfare can be used to bad effect by a bad school...

If it is option 2 then he has a leg to stand on and should push for his pre-paid airfare as it was included in the job offer/contract.

The key: Read the contract (or job offer) mate before getting all hot and bothered.

SO...

Epik and Gepik

Is one better than the other???? better in terms of salary received, job posting, work condition, easy transtion for one who is not in S. Korea at the moment?

If there is a better way to get into the Public School system besides Epik and Gepik....what is it (Keep in mind this is for someone who is applying/looking from outside of S. Korea)

and lastly.... I would very much like to get into the public school scene BUT at the High School level ONLY....can one insist on this....or is it just the luck of the draw in terms of what school and what level you get assigned? And are the public school pretty much the same in terms of quality and student populations, or is it like the US where you have your inner city schools, uptown schools, well funded schools, and broke run down old schools?

Thank you to all the people who posted with helpful feedback and information. Thanks to Grotto and "No L" and any others who are communicating that these days public schools/public school boards often reimburse airfare rather than sending tickets out to the teachers in advance. That's what I was wondering.
I was an EPIK "Long, Long Ago" and airfare was paid in advace that time, as well as being couriered to my house by the teacher training centre I worked for last year. I thought that was standard.
Thanks, folks. This will all get worked out.
