Um...follow the thread...
I am saying "hey you are right" as in "Hey, people did believe that!" as in "Wow, I was suprised people actually believed it" as in "I do not nor did not believe it but shocked that someone could".
Meanwhile, back on the ranch.....
Someone made this thread for a purpose. It's about English teacher blacklists and whether or not they exist.
I would love to see a list and what the hagwon owners "blacklist" teachers for.
I can just imagine what it would look like:
My name is Kim Che-Hyu and I am the owner of Chungdongmun Wonderland. I want to blacklist John Smith from America. No one should hire him. I tell you why:
John Smith ask to me about medical insurance and why he has to work on Saturday. Why he need medical insurance? He is healthy! And everyone is work on Saturday. Why not he?
Always he bother to me!
Also, if I am late to pay him, he complains always! Another thing he does is say "my house is too cold" or "how do I get hot water for a shower".
Well he is a big boy, but he does not know how to turn heat on? Or turn furnace on? Why he can't learn to do...?
Another thing is: Always I pay to my teachers 1.8 million won only. But he said to me he does not work unless 2.1 million. So I give to him 2.0 million. But when I take off 200,000 Won for tax, he complains!
Anyway, do not to hire him anyone. He complain so much so then I get new teacher and new teacher works for 1.8 million won so I fire John Smith.
And then John Smith yell to me "pay my airfare" and "pay my last month wage". Well, I do not pay bad teacher any money so he threaten me!
He say he tell Labour Board and also other English teacher about my school not pay medical insurance and other break contract things.
I told him, contract mean nothing. But he thinks contract is so important. So I call police to him and he run away.
So no one should give him job because he is bad foreigner. |

I never meant to derail the topic. As I said, it was an aside.
I'd also be curious to see and hakwan director's database, but I doubt it exists: too much organization and too much work. Now Hollywood, on the other hand...

Sorry, another aside.
Back in 1996, the hakwan directors in KJ used to meet regularly to discuss bad teachers, bad students, and do a little old-fashioned price fixing.
How do I know?
My director was paying big money to recruiters back then. In those days, there weren't a lot of them - if you didn't like your recruiter, it was hard to find another one. Directors were hog-tied by these recruiters, and not many people were coming to Korea as it was.
Anyways, I showed my director www.eslcafe.com. At that time, posting a job for a school was free. He was elated. He went to the Secret Hakwan Director's Meeting and told them all about it and he and they thanked me profusely.
Shortly thereafter this site went nuclear and they started charging for ads.
So Dave Sperling, if you're reading this, you might find it in your heart to toss the King a few dollars for the favour.
Interestingly enough, that director eventually switched back to recruiters again. For one, there were more recruiters and competition between them was stiffer. For another, teachers got good at using the esl job board to pit one hakwan against the other to get the best deals.
The director found that paying a recruiter to enlist an innocent from a uni campus was well worth the $$ in the long run.
Sorry for the aside again. Just enjoying my morning coffee before starting work. |

Apparently, I too was blacklisted at Immigration, but I don't think Immigration can swear absolute truth with the hakwon owners. Like Whiner said; what about owners who refuse to pay health insurance, proper taxes, pension, overtime, etc...they are going to give an outstanding reference to individuals who demand the signed agreement be recognised? Hardly. The owner has a damn good reason to blacklist a person who is a threat, and that is why they do it.
Immigration wants facts, not opinions. You can't get kicked out of the country because someone wants you out. You must do something seriously wrong, and the accuser has to prove it.
The false accusations Immigration was given about me were purely personal between the institute and myself. The hakwon wanted me out of Korea, and it failed because I hadn't done anything to excuse such serious measures.
You can't be blacklisted because anybody has a personal disagreement with/against you! You have to break a law. It has to be a warranted reason, and saying "He/She is a bad person!", doesn't cut it. Nor does stating he/she is not good for Korean society. Immigration doesn't care about the crap goings on between teacher's and owner's. If you were caught selling/buying drugs? You're on your own. Fighting and guilty? Bye-bye. Upset a hakwon owner? Well, isn't that a crime!
As for changing a name to return here? What?? Isn't that a bit extreme? I wouldn't change my name for love or gold...I certainly wouldn't change it when pressed by Immigration of Seoul, or some begging hakwon owner. As a matter of fact, I would not return here at all. Think of the complications that could rise when your name is changed. I don't think that is a very simple, or wise remedy. It's ridiculous... |
