If that's what you think then they've done their jobs. Unless you want to make an argument for the Church of Latter Day Saints, Scientology is easily the largest, most money dripping, influential cult in operation throughout the world.

They actively recruit the rich and famous to spread their message, go after their "enemies" with hordes of lawyers and private detectives in what amounts to fairly crude intimidation, and oh, they also bought out CAN, the Cult Awareness Network. They're all to happy to steer you away from those other horrible mind control outfits, and will steer you towards their own services.

This is one of the most evil groups I've ever heard of.

It's amazing someone like Cruise can buy into this nonsense.

I've never held any illusions about Cruise's intelligence. He's just a pretty boy who makes good "formula" movies. (Not in the same class as Hoffman, Pacino, Redford, and co.)

Chick Corea, however, is a brilliant, brilliant musician. How he could be taken by it gives me pause.

Not to mention Beck and Isaac Hayes Shocked

Considering the competition, that is a very strong statement. Besides defending themselves with lawyers (an evil group indeed) and using effective marketing strategies (marketers are also pretty shady), what is evil about Scientology?

Well, it's how they use the lawyers for one. "We don't have a case but then the poor journalist doesn't have the money to hire a lawyer... while we got millions! mauahahahah!"

Then there's the huge amount of money they've drained from people for auditing courses and crap. And the unscientific and dangerous health advise they spew. And then there are the families they've split apart because one member didn't want to become a Scientologist. And then there's all the law enforcement agencies they've infiltrated and all the files they've illegally stolen...

Doesn't surprise me. I did a double major in music studies, and got to spend a lot of time around very talented musicians. Not a one of 'em was what I would call well-grounded. In fact, the more talented they were, the more they tended to be off in gaa-gaa land.

If a normal person were taken in by Scientology, I'd be worried and upset.

But this is par for the course for celebrities. If they weren't wasting money and dabbling in self-promotion in this way, they'd be doing it in another. There's always Live 8 . . .

Clambake, a major anti-scientology group, has the complete text of BAREFACED MESSIAH on-line. It's a decidedly unsympathetic biography of L. Ron Hubbard. I've read it off-line, and it's pretty good.

Very useful link--thanks.

Points well taken; When I said "mostly harmless" I was thinking in comparison to Branch Davidians, that cult that offed themselves to catch a ride on Haley's Comet, and other assorted Kool-Aid drinkers (and of course Douglas Adams).

I know absolutely nothing about Scientology. I'm only remotely interested in any religion and even less in home-made ones.

But I do feel sorry for Tom.

I can't imagine a Catholic (for example) going on TV to promote a movie during all the priest/child abuse cases a couple of years ago and being challenged on his/her religious beliefs. Is a promo tour really, really the proper venue for this? I don't think so.
