Giles Peterson is the founder of Acid Jazz and Talking Loud records, he has a fair few mix CDs out and is the number one guy for the kind of music I think you might be talking about. He calls what he does "Joining the dots" between Jazz, Soul, Funk, house, d'n'b etc.

Giles Peterson is the man.I used to go to his Talking Loud gigs on a Sunday afternoon....at Camden Lock....busting the moves on a Sunday afternoon semed like the most natural thing in the world.

On a more alternative hip-hop (I loathe that term, BTW) tip, you can't go wrong with rjD2. 'Dead Ringer' is the better of his two albums, but they're both great.

And of course there's DJ Shadow.

try galactic (especially the track "paint") they're from new orleans, and pretty jazzy/funky
one of my favourite groups is a french duo called nouvelle vague. it's these 2 guys who do bossa nova/jazzy remakes of 80's new wave and punk songs using female singers. don't know if that's exactly what you're into, but i highly recommend their version of "i melt with you" and "guns of brixton"
les nubians are super cool. very sexy french music (english too) i've been listening to "makeda" over and over and over......

Did they actually make an album together? I thought they were going to call themselves 'The Maroons'.
