Do they penalise players in AFL for diving and play acting? And if so, does it happen anywhere near as often as it does in soccer?

In league they try to milk penalties as well, but it isn't policed very much because the players rarely take it too far. The crowd boos the hell out of that kind of thing.

In a state of origin game this year, a player was accused of diving and it caused a huge controversy. He had to come out and publicly defend himself by stating that he was indeed injured. The media and fans were turning on him big time, and it took more than a few publicly stated character references from other players before people eased up on him. One of his team-mates said he would bet his home that his mate was not faking injury. That's how serious the allegations were.

Australian sport has a "get up and get on with it" ethos.

Well, mate, diving in Aussie Rules a sport I love seems to cop comments like he fooled the ump on that one, he milked it etc. Hardly condemnation.
In association football, diving/playacting is largely a cultural thing, that's not to say it only happens in Southern European/South American games, but that in those places, people react largely like they do in Oz, oh, he's milked it.
I lived in England for 18 months & your average bloke down the pub was just as outraged about diving/faking injury as I was.
