It becomes an issue when the female parent commits paternity fraud. When she claims that a man is the father of her child, when she knows in fact that he is not, and the man is forced into providing child support for an infant that is biologically not his.

The most recent infamous case took place in New Mexico. A woman claimed she had a 5-year-old daughter by her ex-husband, and was forced by the court to pay out $20,000 in child support. But the child in fact never existed:
