No R. Simmons there Brachy...
Just talking about a specific machine that has taken the negative impact out of aerobic workout. This is well known fact nowadays. The Elliptical has no impact on your knees as you do not hit anything. |

swimming is considered a no-impact sport/exercise. Are you suggesting that you swim without moving your knees? |

Im not suggesting anything.
Im simply stating that every form of exercise where your legs move, have SOME impact on your knees.
Saying blah blah blah is NO impact is wrong. Low impact yes. No impact no.
eesh. |

Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers offer a no-impact workout that exercises numerous muscle groups. This is achieved through the dual cross-trainer arms combined with the foot pedals. Elliptical trainers provide the following advantages:
Time Efficiency - The dual action of arms and legs optimizes energy expenditure. Requires less time to achieve more results.
* Weight Bearing Exercise - Builds bone density and burns calories more efficiently. Inhibits the onset of osteoporosis.
* No Impact - Safe for joints. Ideal workout for people with back, knee, hips and joint problems.
* Low Maintenance - Less impact means less wear and tear.
* Small Footprint - Does not take up valuable floor space. |

I think two different definitions of 'impact' are in use here.
When machines talk about 'zero impact' they mean the sudden transfer of body weight onto one leg, and the shock being absorbed to some extent by the knee. The elliptical trainers (and good rowing machines when used by someone who knows how to row) stop you crashing your weight suddenly onto one leg the way you do when running, but direct the weight transfer though the legs and back. The knee is certainly stressed, but not shocked.
I wish I could afford a Concept II. |

Okay, I read everyone's advice. I couldn't disagree more.
Very simply, give up weights, give up cardio equipment, give up long distance running. Especially, give up the gym!!!
You don't have to go to the gym or do any of the other things that others posted to get in incredible shape. I have tried many different kinds of exercise in my life but hands down the best is BODY WEIGHT TRAINING!!!
That's right, just use your own body weight. We've all watched gymnists at the Olympics and most of us have secrectly envied the incredible bodies they have and their incredible strength and endurance. Fact, those guys (and gals) don't spend hours in the gym everyday pumping iron!!!
The absolute best at body weight conditioning is Matt Furey.
www.mattfurey.com
His three main exercises are:
1. Hindu squats
2. Hindu push-ups
3. And the KING of all exercises the BACK BRIDGE.
I know many of you don't believe me. I was skeptical too. I bought a couple of his books and without a doubt it was the best money I've ever spent on my body.
When you read his website you might think he is all hype.
Well personally I don't have any problem with someone using hype to sell their products as long as what they sell works. And his stuff WORKS!!!!
For those of you who think you are in great shape, going to the gym everyday pumping iron and using cardio machines, buy his book Combat Conditioning and try his exercises. Then, PM me and tell me how you did. I'll bet you every dime I have that you will be sold on body weight training. Most people who consider themselves in pretty good shape arrogantly believe before they try his exercises that they're going to be easy. After all, they spend so much time in the gym and they look good already. After they give it a go they quickly realize how pitiful their physical condition is. They think that "Oh, the back bridge is going to be easy I work my back out all the time doing lat pull downs, upright rows, dumbbells, machines." Then they woefully find that they can't even hold a Back Bridge for 3 seconds!!! Hey it's nothing to be ashamed about!!! The first time I couldn't hold it either for more than a few seconds. Now I'm up to 5 minutes!!!!
Just give it a try!!! Save yourself some time and money. |
