I oughta kick your arse for even suggesting it.

On the other hand, I think it was when this guy's album made the top 50.

have to agree with yu skinny.

the advent of "progressive rock" was the death of rock'n'roll.

mid-70's punk attempted to revive it but they had a different agenda.

still - i am all for innovation. there is some fine music being made these days. i know it ain't rock'n;roll, but i like Very Happy

i think its rick wakeman - keyboard player with yes, one of the most pretentious prog-rock bands ever.

heard an interview with wakeman once-

Interviewer : When yu listen to yr music now doesn;t it sound pretentious and over-pompous?

Wakeman - Yeah, great innit!

aren't you a massive hip-hop head though?

yeah, but I despise all that crap hip hop getting airplay, ie 50 cent.

particulary when it takes away from other good genres

speaking about rock music. i saw school of rock last week and loved it. I also loved that the guy handed out a YES album and a RUSH album to the kids. Two of my favourite bands during my teenaged years. I still listen to them. Rush rocks harder today than most guys their age and harder than most bands half their age.

I must admit, though, to being very dis-heartened with music during the 'post-Smiths' and 'pre-Nivarna' period. I think that would be around 1987 to 1991. Nothing but dross was making the charts. Lots of cool underground stuff but the mainstream was at the height of it's commercial awfulness.

What about the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and the "Madchester" scene? Or the breakthrough funk/punk of RHCP and Faith No more in 1989?

As Neil Young sang, "Hey hey, my my/Rock and Roll will never die."

No it is not rock. Personally I think pure rock (is there pure rock?) is great. Love the energy of bands like Kiss and ACDC Deep Purple.
I do have a preference towards prog rock. For bands who did and are doing prog rock i think that the people who don't like it (and there are a great many who don't) didn't get what the prog rockers were doing.

I love that rick wakeman quote.
