Hey Bosin,
Just so you know, I didn't call her fat..I said she SOUNDED fat.
She happens to be rail thin, and actually complains about how skinny she is. I am not making fun of her over her body, but over something she can CONTROL on a day to day basis. And it worked. |
Ok, your original messsage sounded worse than it is.
I may of sounded snippy, and this isn't directed towards you, but it bothers me when people mention humilation as a viable punishment. I really hope they're being facetious but I suspect many people aren't. Good teachers, good people simply don't intentionally humiliate or try to hurt students no matter how much they may private dislike them. It's bullying and self-gratification, nothing more. |

There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what people mean by effective - making someone feel conspicuous vs making someone feel unattractive, for instance. Saying 'you're not a big, fat American man, are you? Aren't you a pretty Korean girl? Is that how a nice, Korean girl acts?', etc. is a world away from how I think you took it.
For students who are intent on acting up, there's nothing wrong (in some cases nothing better) than drawing attention to their behaviour in a way that desuades them from carrying on with it. |

You mean "jo" don't you? ( ϴ) |
Ok. Because j and t are close in Korean, I wrote 'to' when my Korean friend pronounced it for me. |

I don't think humiliation is a good idea, and certainly not bullying in any form whatsoever. I find that embarrasing middle school kids with mild teasing or making them sit next to opposite sex classmate can be effective.
I've got a couple of middle school boys who literally can't keep their hands of each other. They're always cuddling and hangin off each other. I find yelling 'Hey stop it you two perverts' a good way of embarrasing them into behaving properly, they're both actually great kids but they they are too into cuddling in class. If it was a boy and girl doing that in Korea it would be trouble for them but as it's two boys then No gays in Korea ehh? I ask them where they're going on their honeymoon quite often, sometimes I'll do it a bit obliquely by saying 'Hmm, you know guys? I,ve heard Jeju is nice this time of year'.
The girls in that class are absolutely terrific and impeccably well behaved, diligent, respectful but fun and mature. The four boys are a nightmare, besides the 'bender twins' we also have a Mr. Mumble and a Mr. Sleepy My ideal job would be in an all girl middle school if those female stars are representative of young Korean women-oldish girls, they even all always do their homework! Those types or a mixed Elementary schools. We usually have a lot of fun in my elementary classes in the Hagwon and by and large these are my favourite age groups to teach, the discipline is generally harder work with the younger ones but when you get them in shape it's great.
I do have a couple of serious problem elementary school kids, the worst is a girl who just refuses to follow instructions and speaks in this really horrible baby voice all the time, she's nine but behaves like a complete baby and is also very defiant. The problem boy is just a freak who behaves in the strangest ways imaginable, I think he has some sort of mental problem so I go easy on him as long as he's not being too disruptive.
If someone offered me a job in a boys middle school I wouldn't take it unless they were going to pay me an absolute crapload of money, give me lots of holidays and a nice apartment to my self. |
