If you're a first-timer, you'd honestly be better off in Seoul. Jeju would be, in my eyes, more of a long-term investment kind of place to teach than Seoul. Feel yourself out with Korea in Seoul, then, if you liked it, move on.
Then again, Jeju is a lot more peaceful and a lot less hectic than Seoul. If that's your cup of tea, and you honestly think you're impervious to culture shock, go for Jeju.

Jeju is a place I've never been to....however, I disagree with the person who mentioned wearing shorts and t-shirts in December....maybe that was during a warm year...
I love warm weather, and that was one of the reasons I chose the South Coast when I was in Korea. But in the winter, it wasn't warm at all. It snowed several times. It was bitterly cold. Many of my students went on skiing trips in Cheju last year, and I doubt they were wearing shorts and t-shirts while doing so....
Ironically enough, when I took my weekends up north in Korea, the weather was always warmer and not as windy. It actually seemed to be warmer in the North part of the country.
I also agree that Seoul is better for a newbie. There are more Western things that make the transition easier. |

Cheju-do always has a pull for me. I have a friend who lived there for three years and loved it. He didn't seem to want for evening entertainment either, for he is no cultural hound and enjoyed his fun.
For me the pull would be the smaller city life, but with a totally different feel than what the mainland has to offer. I think it would be great for a year or two, and then head back to some large city on the mainland. |

Before coming to Korea I considered working on Jeju Island but was deterred by the idea of it being too touristy: Honolulu is the last place in Hawaii I'd want to live.
I chose to work on a sort of Oahu instead: Geoje Island, known as an underrated island with great beaches
( http://english.geoje.go.kr/sub4/index5.htm - the link shows just a few of the many)
and yet it's only 40 minutes by ferry from the big city of Busan.
My favourite island in Korea to visit as a tourist is neither Jeju nor Geoje, but Namhae Island, off the southern coast, a bit too far from urbanity but with the best beach, great hiking areas and a Norweigan-like coastal road.
Yet I am planning a trip to Jeju for my summer vacation or Chusok, whichever one is less popular with the crowds. |
