Thanks. I'm getting on the Evens downloads now...
I'd like to show you the video, but I have no idea how to put it up online in a compressed format. It's on my hard drive, and uncompressed it weighs in at 15 gigs or something. The audio/video quality is high so it takes up a lot of space.
It was filmed mostly in Seoul but we also did a roadtrip to Busan to skate Sajjik stadium. There's also alot of Urban/ Mountain biking, snowboarding, and a good slamsection at the end.
We basically spent every weekend skating all day/evening, and then my coworker and I spent every waking weekday moment editing the thing. It took us about four months. We had an awesome video realease party for about 30 people, did up trailers and VHS copies with soundtracks, the whole shibbaz.
It even has a montage, a la "Team America." |

wow...the video sounds intense.
Indie means independent, therefore, it should be a genreless term. The vast majority of indie music is utter shite that is hoping to be recognized by a corporate label.
Is Sonic Youth indie? Well, SY are essentially recognized as the founders of what you could consider "indie rock" so in most people's hearts they will always be indie. Sonic Youth has been on a major for 15 years now and they make videos but they've never compromised on their craft so...does it matter? i say no.
The band with the best attitude is NomeansNo. They're following is mostly in the punk scene but they've always said "we just write songs and play them how we think they should be played." Also, they don't make music videos because why would they want to make videos for people that don't want to watch them and they've turned down majors. Why? Rob Wright said that they'll sell about 20,000-30,000 as an indie and they'd probably be able to get to around 100,000 on a major. If you factored in all the expenses and annoyances they wouldn't make any more money and they already make enough to live decent...just under the radar. |

My personal indie favs: !!! (pronounced chick chick chick)- 7 or 8 guys (I forget) who put on the best live show you'll ever see; matt pond PA (if anyone downloads recent Conan episodes, they were actually just on promoting their newest album)- I'm still amazed with some of their covers- who knew Holiday Road from National Lampoon's Vacation could ever sound so pretty? The new Death Cab is pretty good, though if you're not into indie bands that have gotten too popular, nevermind that. Iron and Wine is also one of my absolute favorites- Sam Beam is getting pretty well-known outside of the indie world thanks to some oc shout outs and some appearances on major movie soundtrack. I also really like M. Ward and Micah P. Hinson. (looking back on this, these aren't quite the typical indie bands, more like folk indie.) I'm sure you've listened to Blonde Redhead, but figured it wouldn't hurt to mention. Sidenote: Ian MacKaye is awesome, he used to come into the Borders store I worked at all the time- what a Renaissance man. |

Believe me...I've tried. Oh...I've tried!!! Have you heard the andy kerr solo album? the two hissanol albums? pigment vehicle? If NomeansNo does shows in Japan while I'm here I won't be showing up for work for a couple of weeks. |

Do you know if any of the Fugazi guys have side projects? |
There's Ataxia with Joe Lally, John Frusciante (of Chili Peppers fame) and some guy named Josh Klinghoffer. A side project. 5 songs, each of which are 6-12 minutes long. I have no clue if you'd like em of course, but I do. John F does most of the singing but Joe actually sings on one track. (!)
Somebody mentioned M Ward, I wholeheartedly second that. Transfiguration of Vincent is one of my favorite albums, it's brilliant. |

not independent.
here's a few more i like:
pinback - the albums 'offcell' and 'summer in abbadon' are brilliant minimalist exercises in sonic density. i believe they're on touch and go. ex-members of three mile pilot - who sucked.
five style - instrumental funk band on subpop, mid 90s. they opened for tortoise and blew everyone out of the water. guitarist bill dolan is john fogerty, angus young and jimi hendrix all in one tiny package. their self-titled record is crucial.
and one from the past - treepeople - doug martsch of (the ridiculously pretentious) built to spill's earlier band. the album 'guilt regret and embarrassment' on toxic shock/K is a great sorta dinosaur jr. rock slab.
and my friend john's band byathread just recorded a new album. it's superslick but he's my old roommate so i'll jock his band.

concur 100%.
I had problems finding Summer in Abaddon... best of luck finding it in Korea!
D-load 'Penelope', 'Fortress' and 'non-photo Blue' for starters. |

yeah Pinback is great but I much prefer "Blue Screen Life." The members have been in several bands in the past including Thingy and Three Mile Pilot. I didn't like Three Mile Pilot when I first heard them but they really grew on me and I really like them now. Thingy is rad. They are also closely tied to Black Heart Procession.
MBV are great but not independent. I don't care though cuz loveless is mind blowing. Too bad that Kevin Shields will never release another album.
I've just discovered Unwound after hearing about them forever and i'm really digging them.
The first two dino jr. albums are amazing and all of Lou Barlow's projects are too. Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, Sentridoh etc.
Another long time favourite has been Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Download "hell rules' "star trek" or "Lamb's Lullaby." Of course, TFUL282 is absolutely messed in the head....
Uhh...you can never go wrong with some good ol' Ted Leo and the Pharmacists if you're in the right mood, but sometimes they're just too damn uppity for me. Amazing guitarist and songwriter that Ted Leo is though. |

No kidding. Love the stuff but I'm not going to listen to it if I'm trying to relax with a book before going to bed for the night, y'know?
Same way I won't listen to Elliott Smith if I want something energetic and happy to pump me up... |
